One month vacation between Malta and Italy
I am planning a month long vacation from April 6th till about May 4th.
First two weeks we will be traveling alone (2 people) and we want to visit Malta, or possibly split it between Malta and Sardinia or Malta and Sicily. During easter (April 16th), we can to spend it somewhere we can see nice easter procession (originally I was thinking of doing that in Malta).
The last two weeks of this trip we will travel together with our friends, visiting main sights in Italy. For example, so far we plan to start in Rome, then go to Naples (with main goal of seeing Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Amalfi coast), then Florence and Milan. I previous been to Italy few years ago, however on the tour, so few things were kind of rushed.
I think I can easily plan most of the last two weeks in Italy, except for specific details. But what should I do about two weeks that we will spend before arrival of our friends to Rome? Should we dedicate it all to Malta or try to split it with either Sardinia or Sicily. Also, where would be the best to see easter procession on April 16th?

I was in Malta last year for 10days at the beginning of May and while we never ran out of things to do (including spending a whole day in the national archives doing geneology research), I do not think a week+ is needed there for the average tourist.
With the demise of the Azure window on Gozo during a storm this winter, Malta has one less sight to see.
Malta is definitely a Catholic country - you will find masses in both English & Maltese depending on the parish & church.
Be prepared for cool weather - it is too early for beach season and with the ocean breeze you'll need long sleeves / light jacket anywhere along the coast.
With two weeks I would spend 5-7 days in Malta, then the rest in Sicily. You can get a ferry from Malta to Sicily, then fly to Rome from there.
