Thinking about doing a one day trip from Florence to Venice. Is this possible or is it not worth it? Does anyone know how many hours it would take to get to Venice by train or how much a round trip ticket will cost? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks. <BR> <BR>Diane

Diane, I'll be the odd person out here and say "go for it". There are 3 earlier trains Dep~6am,Arr~10am with connections. But I'd take the direct 0840 Eurostar which arr. 1130. And return on the 2010 which arrives in Florence 2357. This would give you 8:40 in Venice. When you walk out of the train station I would take a direct Waterbus to Piazza San Marco which would give you a trip along the Grand Canal and just sightsee your way back to the train station. Venice is small and very walkable (it's ~1.25mi,1.9km from the train station to Piazza San Marco as the crow flies. A 16hr day will give you 8+hrs in Venice, if it's worth it to *you*, Do it. We have traveled to Italy three times in the past four years and will be leaving Fri. 9/24 for another 3 wk. visit. Is Venice worth it, you bet. Our first trip was by car,(a major mistake)for a 12 visit. However it was all we needed to know that we would return, which we did last year and spend 5 days exploring one of the world's truly special cities. Have fun.

I would try to stay another day if possible. I went for one day in May and loved it so much I am going back again this fall. Amazing place!

Way too far to go for one day. Take the train to Siena, or rent a car for the day and travel around Tuscany. Visit Lucca. Or San Gimignano (sp?). You could even take a picnic lunch up the the Boboli Palace, above Florence, and spend the day basking in warm Italian sun with a spectacular view of Florence below. <BR>Save Venice for a tour of Northern Italy at some later date.

Nothing wrong, either, with leaving the bulk of your luggage @ hotel in Florence (either in left-luggage or in your room, if you feel you must hold the room), taking a small bag and spending one night in Venice.

just back from 3 nights in florence and 3 nights in venice.The train takes 3 hours and to do venice in 1 day is not worth even thinking about, We had 3 nights and reckoned on needing at least another one night. Any more advice just e mail me.
