I will be taking a baltic sea cruise in late August. I arrive in Copenhagen early Aug. 20 and have the whole day before embarking on the cruise. I could use help on how to spend my time in Copenhagen.

The bus mentioned in the above link will take you everywhere you want to go in Copenhagen.

Last summer I arrived at the main railway station from Cologne and having changed some money at the kiosk in the station (reasonable rates) I wandered around the station area for a while to get my bearings. Visited a nearby internet cafe to check my e mails then had a coffee and cake.

Having left my luggage in the station locker I got the Citycirkel bus from the station and did a round trip to see where I would like to investigate.

Then got the same bus to the palace and walked a shortish distance to see the Little Mermaid. It is not there at the moment but in China,I think. Nearby was a charming park with restaurants where I had some lunch.

Walked back to the direction of the station as my train was leaving in a few hours time. The Tivoli Gardens was opposite the station and whilst I was not at first sight tempted to enter(big mistake) curiosity got the better of me and I went inside.It was fantastic. If I go to Copenhagen again I will spent the day there. Very good restaurants inside.

Tivoli is OK during the day - but fantastic at night. If you only have daylight hours you might consider visting one or more of the castles (yes, there are several in town, including one with a changing of the guard) as well as a walk down the Stroget. Be sure to stop and have some incredible little sandwiches at lunch. The tiny shrimp on black bread are incredible.

There are a lot of guides you may pick at www.MyDenmarkTV.com - a web based TV Show that can give you insights and practical tips about Denmark. They have lots of very informative free online videos that tackles more about interesting places and stories in the country. So while waiting for your schedule, you can get back the site every week for a newly aired segments.

We will arrive on a Monday in August when not much will be opened, so we can take a tour of the city on this bus.

Nikki, there are buses 901, 902, 903 - they look like water buses, do you know if the routes are similar to the boat tours?

We did same cruise in 2008 and used walking tour outlined in DVD by John Lawrence who was Princess Lines cruise director for years.

We found this DVD to be very helpful for exploring the ports on our own as well as seeing Copenhagen.

Can second the canal tours which you pick up by Nyhaven.

Obviously, with all my posts I just only mentioned one site - MyDenmarkTV.com. But when you try to visit that link, you will find a lot of recommended links. That I think are just consolidated to give the foreigners a better tips and guides when moving to Denmark. What makes it good is, they have these shows of actual interviews for useful tips and a lot more that foreigners in Denmark might find it interesting.

Secondly, if I will post all those bunch of links here, I might just occupies a lot of space and I think it would not be a gorgeous idea. Just one link that talks it all might be enough for me.

May I invite everybody to visit that site and we may talk it here to share our comments.

I am currently living in Copenhagen and find that it is a fantastic city ... I arrived in Denmark around the same time you are travelling there. I definitely agree with the suggestion of taking the water bus or a canal tour which should leave from Nyhavn, the famous canal with all of the colorful buildings you see in postcards. I would skip a city bus tour, only because I find Copenhagen to be charming and impressive not for its sites but for its culture. The Smorrebrod sandwiches are not to be missed for sure, however I would suggest going to a supermarket (they are all over the city, Irma being the most up-scale one) and packing a picnic lunch to take to Kongens Nytorv, a beautiful park which is also connected to the Rosenborg Slot (a castle), the botanical gardens and the Statens Museum for Kunst, a great (and free) art museum which can easily be seen in a hour. You can easily walk all of these parks, and connect back to Stroget (the walking street that leads to Nyhavn) within your day trip.
