one day in Barcelona. what would you do?
We have one-one half days in Barcelona. Does anyone have any suggestions what we can do in that short time frame? We are open to anything.
Thanks,

Agree with Hop-On/Hop-off; gothic cathedral, Sagrada Familia, other Gaudi architecture and the bird sellers and illegal shell games on La Ramblas.

Don't waste your time and money going into la Sagrada Familia. We loved the park and would choose that any day over the church. The Ramblas is forgettable and we much preferred the Pagg=sseg de Gracia.

Hi, We were just there before a cruise and had 1 and a half days to explore. Heres what we did. We got there in the early afternoon, so we walked from our hotel in the Eixample area to Las Ramblas and spent a leisurely few hours just strolling and looking. We ended at the statue of Columbus and walked around the harbor and beach close by. Exploring any city by walking around is always the best I think, just not always possible. We went back to the hotel rested and showered and took off again in the early evening for the Bari Gothic. Saw some lovely buildings and the Cathedral and then stopped at a crowded looking cafe for dinner (tapas). The next morning we bought the bus turistic ticket and did the blue route and then the red route. We did not get off at the Sagrada Familia or the Parc Guell, but we saw them and alot of other wonderful places. I could spend a day at Montjuic alone! If you have the whole day, you can get off the bus and look around some of the sights that interest you, but I really think we'll be going back there when we have more time.

Well, I live in Barcelona and I can say that it's difficult to see the city in one day.
I recommend you the quarter of l'Eixample, which is full or "art nouveau" buildings (not only Gaudíand the Barri Gòtic, especially two of its squares: Plaça del Rei anf the hidden and unknown Plaça Sant Felip Neri.
One gothic church better than the cathedral: Santa Maria del Mar (it is located in the quarter of El Born, our "SoHo".
Please, avoid the Ramblas and walk in the elegants Rambla Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia.

Alex2 or anyone who would like to respond,
My husband and I are going to Madrid and Barcelona next week. We are meeting a guide at the Figueras train station and will be given a tour of Girona. My question: is the Cadaques area ( a beach resort I have been told) worth seeing? How far is it? And how far are we from France? Is there anything worth seeing across the border? natjgc

I think the Cadaques area is worth seeing, perhaps not an extended visit, but its scenery is beautiful enough to look at it It's not very far..maybe half an hour.
You are near from France..maybe an hour. But if you see the Spanish side the French side is very similar. Nothing special without going kilometres farther. Anyway, it's only my opinion

I'll top this post with my tag-along question...
For a first trip to Barcelona what district or neighborhood would you recommend staying in for maximum walkability to interesting parts of the city, an area that includes good local shops, cafes, restaurants?
Thank you.

natjgc, the Cadaques area in the north of the Costa Brava is one of the most beatiful areas in Catalonia: Cadaqués (where Dalí lived), El Port de la Selva or Sant Pere de Rodes abbey are very beautiful places. Also the landscapes of the Cap de Creus.
Crossing the border, you find villages like Port Vendres and Colliure where painters like Derain or Matisse stablished.
The only problem is that now, in summer, the area is very crowded.
Suze, I reccommend you to stay in the Eixample.
