One Day Cruise Stop in Glasgow (Greenock)

We will be docked for one day in Sept. (this year) and I am looking for suggestions for a day trip from the port. I would prefer to find a private tour guide that could pick us up at the ship and show us the sights of Scotland. We would like to visit the Loch Lomond area to see the lake and perhaps a castle. Otherwise, we are open to suggestions. If anyone can give me websites, tour guide names, etc. that would be wonderful.

What is the distance from the port to get to Loch Lomond? I am trying to get an idea of the travel time involved. Thanks so much.

From Greenock to Luss, which is about half way up the west side of Loch Lomond, is a little over 30 miles and about a 45 min to 1 hour drive.

One problem is -- there are TONS of castles in Scotland but not that many near Loch Lomond and w/i easy drive back to Greenock

A few include:

The closest is Dumbarton. http://www.rampantscotland.com/visit...tdumbarton.htm

Mugdock and Craigend castles in the Mugdock Country Park, but they would be fairly underwhelming if you are expecting a WOW factor. http://www.mugdock-country-park.org....ockcastle.html

Bothwell is on the opposite side of Glasgow from Loch Lomond but a local driver guide could manage it. http://tinyurl.com/3wztol6

can't help w/ a driver/guide - I'd contact the Glasgow Tourist Information center or do a google search.

Thank you so much for that info. I'll check it out. Our ship is offering a tour to Loch Lomond and also visiting Inveraray Castle (don't know where this castle is located). It's an all day tour. I know I can book that tour but I hate ship's tours!!!!

Thanks again.

Invererary is farther west - about 25 miles from the northern end of Loch Lomond. In all about 65 miles from Greenock and about 2 hrs each way by coach, a bit less by a local driving a car.

Thanks janisj, seems like a long way from Greenock to see a castle when there are so many castles there. I am not sure I want to travel that much further than Loch Lomond. What would you suggest to see in addition to Loch Lomond? Any souvenir suggestions?

Thanks again.
