I find myself at that stage where I'm ready to book a hotel, but am unable to commit! I almost booked a room at the Artemis Villas in Imerovigli, but hesitate because of the many posts that say "wouldn't think of staying anywhere other than Oia!" I realize I'm being a bit obssesive, but I just had to ask for you valuable advice!

We'll be there from 7/4 - 7/8, we are active 30-somethings, plan to either rent a car or scooter, love charming towns, not so much into nightlife, fantastic view required.

So!...

(1) Is it worth spending a bit more to stay in Oia?? (or opting for a down-grade in hotel?)
(2) Can we get around easily with a scooter...even at night?
(3) Is it really "an easy walk" from Imerovigli to Fira?
(4) Is Imerovigli the kind of place we can stroll around at night before turning in?

Please share your personal preferences and why. Thanks so much!

At 44 I must be an old fuddy-duddy.

I wouldn't rent a scooter anywhere, anytime. I remember Key West in the 90's (when I was in my 30's.) A couple of locals said, "Wanna die? Rent a scooter."

It's a slope up from Fira to Imerovigli. I thought it very easy when I walked it in October. It was pretty with great views.

Bostonjenn-- we'll be there in late August and have decided to stay in Imerovigli -- just curious -- have you been quoted any prices for car/scooter rental?

Hi,
Oia is a charming village. At night you can walk around and get a drink etc. Imerovigli is lovely because there is little there. What do you like, a village or country? You can get around easily with a car, so I assume you can get around easily with a scooter. There is a very narrow section of the road to Oia that has cliffs on both sides. I mean narrow, just 2 small car widths. If that makes you nervous with a scooter at night, do not stay in Oia.

Oia gets most of the press and it's lovely, but Imerovigli has its charms as well. You are higher on the caldera at Imerovigli.

We enjoyed Imerovigli because of the wonderful strolls down the paths to dinner and if you're up for a fun hike, the Skaros is an amazing walk. Incredible views. Oia is a charming town, but the quiet variety of Imerovigli worked great for us.

Whatever you decide, don't fret -- it's a choice between two very lovely places.

repete is the skaros hike you mention the volcanic neck-thing that's out in the water? You hike down to a narrow isthmus then back up and around the volcanic neck?

I was forced to hike that in October but didn't know it had a name. The view of Oia and the orthodox church on the far side is one of the highlight views of my life.

Yup, that's it. It's a wonderful stroll. My son wanted to do it every day -- and really enjoyed watching the cruises and ferries arrive so far below. I'm glad I took water and had a nice pool to return to.

If you want to go to the nightlife and avoid the hassles of scooters/taxis, I recommend Imeriovigli. I stayed there last time I went to Santorini and plan to do the same for my upcoming trip. Try to get a hotel with a pool and balcony, as you're far from the beaches and you can't just use another hotel's pool. Imeriovigli is far enough away from Fira to feel remote, but you can still walk to and from the nightlife on a scenic pathway along the caldera in about 20 minutes. Also, I don't remember restaurants in Imeriovigli, so it will be easier to walk to those as well. Though I hear Oia has one of the best restaurants on the island way down on the water. I recommend going out to Oia at least as a day trip from Imerovigli. I hear it's a great hike, but close to 2 hours, I think.

Thanks for all your input. You've all given me some comfort in Imerovigli, but I'm still trying to see if I can find a something comparable in Oia for less than 120 Euro.

I just stumbled across a great site for those planning a trip: http://www.virtualgreece.net It gives you panoramic views of some areas. What a great tool!

And Lisa, I'm seeing quotes for 55E and up for high season. I'd be happy to foward you and email from AutoEurope if you like.

One Last Reply.... Just returned from a bit of Greek island hopping. Spent 4 days on Santorini (two weeks ago). Stayed in Imerovigli and loved it. Rented a scooter for 3 days (going rate in May was between 5 and 10 euros per day) and found it thoroughly enjoyable (don't forget the helmet). Saw lots of folks using 4-wheelers as well. Public transport is fine, but you will find yourself waiting and "wondering when" on occassion. Did the trail walk from Oia to Imerogvigli and it took a little under 2 hours and would do it again. The Mythos tasted fantastic at the conclusion. Favorite beach was "Red Beach" on the south shore, right after a delightful picnic at Cape Akrotri Lighthouse. Plenty of super markets for provisions. Fira is ok, but remember that the ships dock below, and the crowds can get pretty intense. Favorite restaurant was "Skaros" in Imerovigli. But, "Sunset" Taverna in Ammoudi (below Oia) should not be missed by those looking to relive a honeymoon from years gone by. Sooo.. in the end my vote is IMEROVIGLI.... highest point on the caldera, quiet and serene, 20 minute walk to Fira, 15 minute scooter ride to Oia and Ammoudi, great restaurant, need I say more! Imerovigli it is!! I just booked 4 nights at Artemis Villas - private balcony w/ view, pool, sundeck for 92E/nt. We also plan to rent a scooter, despite some who advise against. Can you refresh my memory? We had great meals at both Skaros and the Imerovigli Taverna that were right across from each other. One was above the path/street and the other was below on the steeper edge -- but I can't recall which was which. Thanks for any help.

I say... blame it on the retsina. And although a bit of the grape passed my lips at "Skaros," I can definitely remember the location.... beautifully situated on "the edge," ie. as one is strolling toward Fira, this delightful restaurant sits/hangs on the right. Hope this helps fill the void. Kali Antamosi...

Ah, yes, thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I've used the retsina defense far too many times ... at least until after my next trip.
