Off Beaten Path trip to Iceland in August
Good morning! Looks like our family is heading to Iceland a few days in early August. Probably 4 nights/5 days? I've been before and hit the highlights of Iceland (Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik, southern coast tour to Vik) and would like to perhaps visit more of northern Iceland. Is there a good town to base out of or should we anticipate moving around? This website had a good tentative plan that we could tailor. Wondering if anyone else had suggestions. Would like to visit a thermal spa, see cool landscape, whale/puffin watching, charming villages, etc.

Thanks in advance

A lot of what's on that itinerary could be done from Akureyri and Húsavík.
We covered some of the north on our 10 day Ring Road trip back in May.
Here's the report if you're interested:

From Akureyri we explored Dalvík, Ólafsfjörður, and Siglufjörður.
From Husavik we explored Lake Mývatn and Krafla. We were underwhelmed with Lake Mývatn and Krafla, but we're glad we based in Husavik instead of Reykjahlíð, (which we just didn't get the attraction of to be quite honest).
We explored Dettifoss on the drive between Husavik and our next destination, Seyðisfjörður.
