My husband and I are condsidering going to Germany and the Netherlands next year in October and I am curious about the weather that time of year.

We want to use FF miles to offset the cost of the trip and make it more doable with the exchange rate as it is. The availability of FF tickets into Frankfurt seems to be good in general.

We will have 2-3 weeks and are thinking about visiting the German wine country, spending a week in Amsterdam, and then seeing 1 or 2 other areas in the general vicinity.

My memory of Germany in Oct. whe we lived there is that the temps were in the 50s most of the time, with some variation depending on what part of the country you're in. And I'm guessing that month isn't a particularly rainy period.

I like that type of weather for traveling -- not too hot. But you will have to bring a sweater or two and a warm jacket. Don't bother bringing shorts or sandals.

I'd expect Amsterdam to be similar in temps but maybe with a higher probability of rain. Bring an umbrella.

There are many different "wine countries" - the Mosel, Rhein, Weinstrasse and Franken regions among them; in the first week of October there's a wine festival in Boppard - just south of Koblenz - on 10/3-5, with fireworks on Saturday. It's quite popular so reserve ahead, check St. goar and Koblenz too for accommodations as they're very close.

Thanks for the replies. I like cooler weather for travelling too. I just finished my master's degree, which means this will be the first year that we can travel outside the school holidays

We haven't settled on which specific area of Germany to tour for the wine. We'll figure that out if the trip actually happens. We have been to Germany once before - Bavaria - and spent quite a bit of time drinking beer. So this time around we thought we'd check out the wine

Last year, we spent 3 weeks in Germany and Austria beginning mid-September. It was a beautiful time of year to travel. It was definitely "Fall" especially in the higher elevations, but we had great weather for most of the 3 weeks.

I'd suggest that after Amsterdam, you might want to see some of Belgium. It's been many years since I have been there, but many on Fodor's recommend Antwerp and/or Bruges.

From there, you could visit Trier, the oldest city in Germany with several wonderful Roman ruins, and some of the many other wonderful small towns on the Moselle River such as Bernkastel-Kues, Beilstein, Zell, and Cochem.

If you have add'l time, you could head over to Wurzburg, Bamberg and/or Rothenburg ob der Tauber for a few days.

Do not trust these weather statistics, every year is different. Average temperatures are not too meaningful if you don't know the complete range.

From -5°C at night to +25°C on clear sunny days everything is possible in October. The weather is impossible to predict months in advance. If you're lucky you catch a Golden October phase with bright sunshine and day temperatures of +15-20°C or even more in the wine regions. You may just as well be stuck in rain and +5 to +10°C. Nights may, but don't necessarily have to, go down to zero.
Most likely you'll have a bit of everything.

Bring clothes that can be worn in layers, and don't forget rain jacket and umbrella.

I've checked weather sites and have the data - just looking for people's experiences You know, to get a feeling of things. In addition to temperatures, there are things like humidity, wind, etc. that really affect climate.

I've seen 42 Octobers in Germany - all I can tell you, from my experience, is what I said above. Prepare for a mix of everything.

October is the month that the seasons change. I've seen 30 degree's on one day, and 2 days later it snow. Like others have said, you should prepare for every type of weather.
