October Honeymoon Planning
Hi! I am so glad I found this forum, it has been really helpful in planning so far!
Well, we are planning to spend our honeymoon (leave Oct 8 or 9) and spend 10 nights in Italy - 4 or 5 nights each in Venice and the Amalfi Coast and maybe 1 night in Rome.
I have been thinking the best thing to do would be to fly into Rome and possibly even spend one night in Rome. Most of the flights have us getting in before noon. We are not the type to run from sight to sight, but thought maybe we'd see something in Rome that night - crash and rest and then see maybe one thing before taking a train/ferry to Amalfi the next day.
Neither my fiance or I have been to Italy and his grandfather was an Italian immigrant...so I am thinking it might just be worth it to be hectic that first day.
Ok...so on to Amalfi Coast. I thought it best to do this leg first to hopefully catch some warm weather in the south. I am struggling a little with where to stay, but I think Positano seems best. We just want to relax, enjoy, and experience Southern Italy. We are not going to do any serious shopping. We do like hiking and exploring - as I have read Amalfi can be great for. So I was thinking Positano with a couple of day trips - definitely Pompeii and Capri if the weather is nice.
Then off to Venice by train. Spend 4 or 5 nights there and then fly home to Atlanta. We are both incurable romantics and even though everyone doesn't love Venice I have no doubt it will be amazing for us...in the rain or cold or whatever. We'll be on our honeymoon in Venice, right?!?!
So, I welcome critique of my plans! I am really struggling with when to purchase the flights. I guess that's everyones dilemma! I have held off making hotel reservations until I get our flights, but maybe that isn't the smartest thing.
hlocke1 and ira - if you are reading this, your posts have been especially helpful! thank you!!!

Also - I would love to hear recommendations of hotels in Venice and Amalfi Coast/Positano areas.
We want something nice and reasonable. It is our honeymoon, but we want to keep the price around 100-150 E and would be thrilled to find a steal for less.

In Venice, Pensione La Calcina is wonderful, and a room without canal view would be well within your budget. A room with canal view is a bit more (around 160 euro), but well worth it. A nice benefit of La Calcina is the rooftop terrace, which you can reserve for a hour for private use. We went at sunset with a bottle of wine and some appetizer/snacks from the grocery, and it was magical.
If you post a separate question titled "Honeymooon hotels in Venice and Amalfi Coast/Positano" you will get lots more suggestions.

Carol,
Ira recommended the hotel La Sirene in Praiano. I and a few others have stayed there since and really liked it. It's in your budget. Very, very nice place, some rooms have terraces with sea views. Imaculately clean, typical Amalfi Coast tile everywhere. Lovely breakfast terrace. Giancarlo and Maria were expecially helpful and kind.
I can very highly recommend ristorante La Brace in Praiano.
Note: Praiano is not a "resort" type town. Very small, mostly local residents, no shopping or nightlife to speak of.
If you want the whole "resort" experience, stay in Positano.

Thank you for your suggestions...and I think I'll start a new post!
Pensione La Calcina only has apts available. And I am not sure about staying in Praiano vs Positano. We aren't exactly looking for a resort-type feel and would rather have a more local, non-touristy experience. We also want to be in a convenient location for day trips to Pompeii, Ravello, and Capri. Would Sorrento be a better base? Thanks!

Hi C,
>I am not sure about staying in Praiano vs Positano. We aren't exactly looking for a resort-type feel and would rather have a more local, non-touristy experience. <
Which is exactly why you would want to stay in Praiano.
Since you are most interested in Venice and the AC, may I suggest that you fly into Venice and out of Naples or vice versa.
www.alpieagles.com flies between Venice VCE and Naples.
I would leave Rome for another visit.
Have a lovely honeymoon.

I too would leave rome for another visit or steal a night from venice and add in onto rome. I would also still at least look into an apartment which we had in both rome and venice. It is so relaxing, not necessarily more money and anyhow you save in some eating out expenses. viewsonvenice.com and sleepinitaly.com Even if they list a 7 night minimum stay they often will let you do less if they have availability.
