Hello Marjorie,
Oberursel is a nice, little town in the Taunus hills, 10km from Frankfurt. There`s a lot do in that area. Bad Homburg, a spa, is only 5 min. away. You can take a walk in the beautiful Kurgarten behind the Kurhaus, where you can get treatments. If you like to gamble, there`s a casino near the Kurhaus. There`s a fun bath as well with a large and very well designed Sauna section-it`s called "Taunus-Therme". If you you happen to have a car take a trip through the Taunus-it`s very nice to visit Koenigsstein, Eppstein and Kronberg. All are smaller cities where you can see beautiful homes of veeeery rich people and a lot of old, half-timbered houses in a sometimes spectacular setting(Eppstein). If you are interested in history-visit the Saalburg. It`s an old Roman defence post with a very interesting museum. They invented central heating! Another possibility is the "Hessenpark" in Ansbach. That`s an open-air museum where a lot of old houses from all Hessen are rebuilt with the original material. You can watch people doing handicrafts like they did ages ago. For example, there`s an old school, a butcher, a weaver, someone who shows how to make cheese and different other things. It`s fun for adults and kids.
If you have too much money-go shopping in Kronberg. That`s the place where the most millionaires per squaremeter live(statistically). Another option, of course is to visit Frankfurt. Expensive shopping is on Goethestrasse, if you don`t care about Gucci etc. go to Zeil.
There are a lot of Museums in Frankfurt, the Alte Oper for opera, ballet etc. and if you`re tired of listening to German all the time-there`s an English theatre on Kaiserstrasse.
One last tip-there`s a really authentic beer pub with it`s own microbrewery. Definetely go! They serve hearty meals, the beer is great and you sit on wooden benches. The downside-I can`t remember the name, but it`s in the old part of Oberursel, people will know it if you ask.
If you have any other question, I`ll be glad to help you out.
Miriam
