Interesting as there is a feature in the May 22, 2005 "Washington Post" Travel section about Puglia which purports that it will soon be the "next" place to be in Italy.

Yes, what a beautifully written article, but I am tired of seeing articles with the "next Tuscany" label. First it was Puglia, then Sicily, now Le Marche. All are worthy on their own merit---why the Tuscany grabber?

It's the fad aspect that bothers me,
Le Marche is 'the next' Tuscany, Zagreb is the 'the next' Prague, , pink is the next lime green, etc I suppose Tuscany's trendiness was greatly enhanced by the Mayes books and film.

Destinations have their own appeal, their own pluses and minuses. I hate this Disney-fication in the travel articles, as if we're all just looking for the next theme park.

And there are actually some of us who don't think that Tuscany is necessarily "the" place to be in Italy anyway.

Le Marche has been billed as "the next Tuscany" for some time now. All it really means is that property values are shooting upwards quickly as foreigners (particularly Brits) look to buy holiday homes there.
I'm taking Italian classes at the Italian Cultural Institute in London. The popular British show, A Place in the Sun, is recruiting there for Brits (couples or retirees) looking to buy a place in Lombardy or the Lakes region.

FYI, in France, Poitou/Charente is now "the next Dordogne."

While at the library, getting the Hachette Vacances book on Southwest France and the Dordogne - - I also picked up their volume on Poitou/Charentes. Their guide to P-C is just as thick as the SW/D (even though it is a smaller area) - - and just as replete with enticing looking destinations.

Our first night's stay next week "in the Loire Valley" is technically in Poitou-Chrentes - - in Oiron, midway between Loudun and Thouars.

Best wishes,

Rex

Bon voyage, rex
and have a glass of Pineau des Charentes on us. Well, not really on us, but it's the thought that counts.
