NY Times's Seth Kugel on Mobile phone woes and solutions (sort of0
The NYT Frugal Traveler Seth Kugel explores the problems and some solutions in "How to Avoid a Smartphone's Bite" in the Travel Section of the Times on Sunday, September 23, 2012.
He looks at five types of users and both the perils they face and the inadequate solutions they find. I don't think there is anything we haven't read here, but he organizes it all very nicely.
A good one to give to a friend who is just starting the process

This article is useful and backs up what we were told at the AT&T store this past week-end. We bought the international calling plan, which we can cancel when we return from our trip, but passed on the $30 per line ($60) that would have been charged for data. Our iPhones (4s) have settings that allow you to turn off the data unless wi-fi is detected. Sort of a fail-safe setting that will not allow us to inadvertently use any super high priced foreign data. We are going to Europe next week and I have already changed my phone settings to what they will need to be while we are away.
