Nuremberg day trip
Hi once again !
We are looking to plan our time in and around Nuremberg next summer. We will arrive there at 17;30 on tuesday july 19 (coming from Dresden via Erfurt). we booked 4 nights there (so 3 full days)
We have a hard time planning a bit what could be our daytrip (of course we will buy train tickets on place depending of the weather).
We have a list of places we could/want to see (we are open to suggestions !)
Bamberg
Wurtzburg
Rothenburg
Regensburg
Playmobil park (we got 2 kids with us, 4 an 8 years old)
Questions:
1) Can we combine a vist of Wurtzburg and bamberg ? We could leave Nuremberg in the morning (after 9 so we could use the Bavarian train pass),Arrive one hour later in Wurtzburg. We could stay there 4-5hours and have a quick lunch, Then we could leave aroung 15:00 to get to Rothenburg (arrival around 16:00) We could have a dinner there enjoy the place for 2-3 hours and get back to Nuremberg at 19:00. Would it be enough in both places ?
2) We could keep one day for Bamberg
3) An another day for Playmobil and sightseeing in Nuremberg
4) Regensburg wont fit in that plan. Since we are going to Salzburg after our 4 nights in Nuremberg we thought about making a stop there (3 hours or so) will it be enough ? Should be change that planning to get more time in Regensburg ?
Should we add places ? remove other places ? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome !
Thanks !

Würzburg's main attraction is the Palace (Residenz). Direct walking distance from the train station is 1.1 km. On the way back, you may do a little detour through the Old Town, this way would be a little longer, around 1.8km. So, you may need less than 4 hours for Würzburg, especially if you do not sit down for lunch, but grab something to eat in the Old Town or in the train station.
In Rothenburg, you will have time enough to walk through Old Town, climb up the City Hall tower and even visit the criminal museum (if you like).
In Bamberg, you will have time for relaxing. Go onto (yes, they say "onto" there) a beer cellar and have a good lunch. Visit the town thoroughly.
After you have seen Rothenburg o.d.T., Bamberg and Würzburg you may have seen enough historical towns, so you may even skip Regensburg. See, how the trip evolves and how much energy you have on that very day. It will be a wonderful trip even without Regensburg.

Thanks traveller1959 !
We have a hard time figurung how much to allows to every places. I've read that Rothenburg+ wurzburg on the same is too much I also read that it's enough. I,ve read we should skip Regensburg, others say it's not to be miss.
For now our main question is what we should do between Nuremburg and Salzburg.
1) Go directly to Salzburg (3 hours ride ICE + IC)
2) Stop for 3-4 hours on the way (regensburg ? Prien Am Chiemsee ? )

I think it's more economical to combine Würzburg and Rothenburg (which you should not miss despite that many tourists). You can get an overview over Würzburg within two and a half hours:
1. Walking from Station to the Residenz via Kaiserstrasse and Theaterstrasse: 15 min. Visit 45 min (first English tour ist at 11:00 am: http://www.residenz-wuerzburg.de/eng...ist/admiss.htm)
2. Residenz - Cathedral (impressive gothic exterior, interior uninteresting due to heavy WWII bombing): 15 min
3. Cathedral - medieval Main bridge (from the north end fine view on the Marienburg castle, from the south end nice view on the city): 30 min
4. Main bridge - Market (gothic Market Chapel): 30min
5. from the adjacent Domstrasse back to the station with Tram 1, 2 or 3 or walking: 15 min
So, you could catch the 13:41 train to Rothenburg (destination of train is »Treuchtlingen«, transfer at Steinach track 5 to the Rothenburg »dinky«, arr. 14:49)
If you want to take lunch in Würzburg (following train leaves 1 hour later), good places are, e.g., the inns of the big Würzburg wineries, Juliusspital or Bürgerspital (the latter you will bypass on your walk to the Residenz) or one of the oldest wine bars, the »Maulaffenbäck«, Maulhardgasse 9 (near market).
Take more time in Rothenburg to see some spots less frequented by groups, e.g. church St. Jakob (altar by T. Riemenschneider), Burggaertlein; make a stroll on the walls ...
Plese note: last evening trains leave Rothenburg at 20:06 and 22:06 (transfers in Steinach - destination »Treuchtlingen« again - and Ansbach).

Regensburg is out of your way. 3-4 hours in Prien give you enough time to visit Herrnchiemsee castle by boat. Timetable of the boat: http://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/e...92015-kopie-1/
Info von the castle: http://www.herrenchiemsee.de/englisc...lace/index.htm

Thanks a lot for those advices !
We don't really want to visit the residenz in for two reasons:
1) That kind of thing is quickly boring with young kids
2) English (our second language after french) is only speaken by me and my wife.
About Regensburg:You tell us it's out of the way but I can Found itinerary with that place in dbbahn. We can leave Remberg at 7:30 am, be at Regensburg at 8:30. We can stay there for four hours then train to mUnich and Munchi to Salzburg. Arrival in Salzburg 16:48.

Ok, so you don't travel on a Bayern-Ticket? Or are you going at weekend? That's, of course, a different story. So, the choice is up to you - beautiful landscape plus kitsch palace (Chiemsee) or another historical city. Regensburg is certainly worth the detour.
I suppose your timetable is the following? Since you start before 9:00 am, you can use the Bayern Ticket for these trains on weekends but not Monday to Friday.
Nürnberg Hbf ab 07:35 13 RE 4855
Regensburg Hbf an 08:38 9
Regensburg Hbf ab 12:44 9 RE 4859
München Hbf an 14:17 25
München Hbf ab 14:44 12 M 79025
Salzburg Hbf an 16:41 5CF
>I dont understand the part about Treuchtlingen. On the map there's train station at Rothenburg (hbf).<
Sorry, it was not my intention to confuse you. Rothenburg has, of course, a train station. What I wanted to tell you: At Würzburg main station, the train indicator on the platform will *not* show you a train to Rothenburg, but to »Treuchtlingen«, which is the final destination of that train. You have to switch from that train at »Steinach bei Rothenburg o.d.T.« to the little Rothenburg train, leaving at track 5.
BTW: take your seats in the Treuchtlingen train at left side, it will give you nice views on the river Main for the first 20 min.
