Norway's glaciers and more!
Can I please ask for some expert advice? Great. I am a Texan that will be travelling to the wonderful country of Norway in July 2000. I would like to find out the best way to get to a glacier. Should I go from Oslo to Flam and then onto a ferry to see the Nigardsbreen glacier/Jostedal OR do I go to Lom from Otta? (p.s. I have a ScanRail pass)
I've got 6 nights to complete my trek!! I'm also visiting Bergen and hoping to see the wonderful band, A-HA!!! Any suggestions on the glacier-thing or anything else will be WONDERFUL!! Many thanks!!

I would recommend the country around the Geireinger fjord and Hellesylt (sp?)- we drove and hiked for a day there last year and it was wonderful. There was a glacier around there that people we met enjoyed but you might have to drive. Maybe look into that region. Enjoy Norway.

Hey, Cruz

You're probably enjoying thinking about travelling in chilly Norway right about now -- I'm in Dallas and would love to get out of this heat!

I lived in Norway for a year, and I think you might really enjoy doing the *Hurtigruten*, the coastal steamer that runs from Bergen all the way up to to Russian border in the Arctic circle. I did the trip when I was there, and it was staggeringly beautiful. You'll go through fjords, visit costal islands along with interesting cities like Trohdheim and Tromso, plus we had an optional side trip to a glacier. Another plus, if you're watching your money (and I would, as Norway is horribly expensive), is that you don't have to get a room: you can take a sleeping bag and sleep on deck. That's what I did, and it was wonderful, but forget about sleeping under the stars - you'll be there during the Midnight Sun. I'll never forget waking up, never knowing if it was morning or still the middle of the night, watching elderly passengers playing cards at 3 am, etc. There's food on board, obviously, or you can just pick up food at the stores in the cities where you stop along the way.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Cruz,
Since I'm a norwegian I feel obligated to answer your questions. If you check out this web site you will find some answers on how to get to Nigaardsbreen:
http://www.bre.museum.no/
There are also other information and great pictures on those pages.
If you are looking for a place to stay, you should consider Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand: http://www.kviknes.no/eng-utfl.htm
You also should consider Trondheim and Røros. www.trondheim.com
Other interesting links about Norway:
http://vestinternett.no/nordfjord/index_eng.html
http://www.fjordinfo.no/naeringsliv/sfr/
http://www.fjordinfo.no/laerdal/
http://www.fjordinfo.no/fjaerland/
http://www.tourist.no/
http://www.aktiv-ferie.com/2000/
http://www.touristguide.no/index_no.shtml
http://www.excite.com/travel/countries/norway

I have noe idea if A-HA is appearing somewhere in Norway in July, but you could check out their website at:
http://home.sol.no/~ohagerup/a-ha/

Have a wonderful visit. You will defenetly find Norway complete different than Texas. We drove through Texas last year and there was not much that reminded me about Norway....
Kaja

Hi Cruz,
do not know if you will see this message, but I meet you while you were visiting in Balestrand, so the glacier that you ended up seeing, was the Jostedal Glacier in Fjaerland!!!!Hope you enjoyed your stay here and that lots of people will follow your route and come to Balestrand Pensjonat (www.balestrand.net)
