Norway Trip - Off the beaten track

We are thinking about the trip and since we opt for the "outback" versus cities, we are considering Geiranger and Solvorn, Northern Cape and Lofoten Island areas, unless someone can convince us otherwise, that Bergen or Oslo are a must see. Recommendations? Are there mosquitos? Does it rain a fair amount on the west coast areas in the summer. Thanks

Oslo has some interesting museums: its skansen, the Viking ship museum, the Kon Tiki museum and the Fram museum.

We stayed in Solvorn which has very limited accommodations. I think that we were lucky to find a room. Reservations might be in order. But I think that the place where we stayed helped with finding activities such as kayaking in the glacial lakes in the mountains above. You might want to take a look at my trip report; click on my name to find it.

RSS: Just to familiarize you with a fairly good piece of the country, I've linked some pix below.

If you wish, scroll down to Photo #126...which begins at the southern tip of the Lofotens and the picturesque village of "A" (pronounced "Aw"). Driving is easy, good signage, with scant traffic. We ferried from Bodo where we had rented our car (drove to Tromso..you can take in North Cape from there) and turned it in in Narvik).

The very Striking Geiranger fjord is prominent in the pix, also. For a few cities (or large towns)You might want to consider Alesund (at the head of Geiranger)Tromso and Bergen. We found that Oslo had enough to offer for a few days and we took the Norway in a Nutshell train/boat journey, Oslo to Bergen. In addition, we had booked just three nights on the Hurtigruten (2, Bergen to Trondheim, stayed one night, and then connected for the one night voyage to Bodo where we began our auto trip).

This way, we had taken in a goodly variety of Norway. Hope you have ample time...we covered the above in a month (mosquitoes were not any problem anywhere, in August, no rain, and cool enough for a light jacket or sweater). Is Bergen worth some of your time? Yes, IMO. And do vsit the Edvard Grieg home (Troldhaugen) for it's idyllic setting (short bus ride from Bergen).

Enjoy your Norwegian venture. I'm guessing you will.
