Norway fjords and glacier: best way to get there?
Hey there!! It's me again! I had some wonderful advice on the glacier question, but one thing I still can't find...and that's How do I get there from Flaam?

I have not found any info on any ferries or buses or anything that will take me to the glacier. Where is the best place to stay, how can I make the most of my trip? I plan on spending at least 2 days there before I continue on to Bergen and then night train to Oslo. Any itineraries for your "lost and innocent Texas girl"??? Please help..I have to be thorough.

Cruz...

You did'nt say how you are planning to arrive at Flam, so I'm assuming you will be arriving by train from Oslo, changing onto the Flam railroad at Myrdal.

Flam is a very small village on the Sognefyord (excuse spelling)which caters particularly to the people passing through from train to fiord ferries and jetcats, although there are a couple of hotels/guesthouses there.
From what I saw once the last boat leaves at around 2 p.m. not much will happen there.

To continue touring at a reasonable pace I think you would need a car rental out of Flam, if you don't take a boat. I don't know whether you can rent in Flam..doubtful I would think.

I thought you would have found some useful information on all the websites you were given when you last posted, however I've got one or two more for you that are relative to the Flam area.
On my last trip I picked up a little booklet/brochure, in English, called "Daytrips by Public Transport in Sogn og Fjordane" which you would find very useful indeed. I'm sure one of the sponsoring companies would mail you a copy if you request same on their websites, which are as follows:

Boats. www.fylkesbaatane.no
Busses. www.nbe.no
Flam Station. Fax+57 63 23 50
TouristBoard. Fax+57 67 28 06

The boat company is very switched on and helpful, but surely the Tourist Board will have the local literature you need.

Good Luck, and its worth the planning because when you get there it is fantastic.
Cruz..

After my last post I had a browse thru the brochure I was telling you about, and I might have an answer to your question.
I'm assuming you are trying to get to either the Nigard Glacier Breheim Centre Jostedal OR the Norwegian Glacier Museum In Fjaerland.
Well, good news, providing you are an early riser.
There is boat and bus day trip from Flam to both centres. The boat leaves Flam at 0600, for Sogndal, arriving 070, from where you catch one bus to Fjaerland, or another to Nigard. Both tours give you 5/6 hours at the destination for Glacier walks etc.,and then return in the reverse direction. On the Museum tour you arrive back in Flam at 1700, on the Nigard tour at 2155. They don't appear to operate on Saturdays or Sundays, or at least not to the same schedules, so try for midweek.
The brochure I've used is 2 years old, but I doubt there would be many changes, if any.
A better option may be when you first get to Flam, take a boat to Sogndal and base yourself there, which is only a short bus trip to either place.
You should be able to check all this out on the boat website I gave you.
