Northern Italy with 2 kids itinerary help

We jumped the gun on a low fare and are flying to Italy in August for 8 days with 2 kids (4 and 6). Can you recommend an itinerary? I'm thinking Lakes (which one) or the Liguria coast and maybe Venice. We don't want to move around too much. Thank you.

In just 8 days I would do Lake Guarda (perhaps Sirmione) - which has activities/amusement areas for kids and Venice. That's plenty of travel with 2 little ones in so few days

The fun park Gardaland is close to Peschiera del Garda (direct trains from/to Milan and Verona - Padova - Venice).

The closest lake (seen from Milan Malpensa airport) is Lake Maggiore. Good base for the visit of Milan and (if you have a car) Southern Switzerland, the Alps (biggest waterfall in Val Formazza) and some old sanctuaries like Varallo, Madonna del Sasso, Sta Caterina del Sasso, Re........
Tons of hiking possibilities.

You are at the height of the holiday season. You need to book an apartment now. You might also like an agriturismo.it type site, basically homestay on or near a farm.

You will also need something like a pool and A/C as August can be damp-hot.

Most agriturismos require a car to get to.

Warning: Venice will be very crowded in August. If you stay in Venice proper you can work your way around the crowds. Maybe do excursions during the day -- like the beach at the Lido, the islands in the lagoon, particularly Murano (glass blowing) and Burano (cute little lace-making town).

In fact (almost) all of Europe vacations in August, hence the warning to book immediately.

All tourist resorts in Italy will be crowded between August 6th and August 26th and prices are usually the double of those in June.
So book accommodation asap in order to get what you really need.
