Northern Italy includes northeastern Italy and northwestern Italy, and both merit a visit of 10 days, so you'll have to choose from lots of beautiful places.

Northeastern Italy includes Venice, Trieste, Lake Garda and the Dolomites. Northwestern Italy includes Milan and the lake district which includes several beautiful lakes - Como, Maggiore, Orta and others.

If you want to visit Venice, it deserves at least 3 days and that leaves a week for the rest. Lake Garda (and Verona which is close by) is nice but the lakes in the west are far more enticing. Bellagio, on Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

Perhaps my web site can help you. Among our trips described on the site are 2 trips to this area.
Here's the URL:

And, the fall is a great time to be there.

If you're interested in Lake Como and surrounds, I have some pages about some out-of-the-way places linked from http://www.straughan.com/italy/travel/lake_como.htm

Wow Steve--we seem to enjoy many of the same itineraries. I may use your trip to Croatia for my future planning.

Marcilee, with 10 days, I would fly into Milan, spend 3 nites at one of the lakes, drive to Castelrotto in the Dolomites, and end with 4 nites in Venice. The option is the barolo country of Piedmont you can see in Steve's journal.

Barolo is great if you are into wine!!!

Bob, we only did half the trip to Croatia that we wanted to. Next year, we'll do northern Croatia and Slovenia.
