Yes it's possible to go into Northern Cyprus from the South. The access is via Nicosia only.

In Nicosia, you can cross the border only on foot at Ledra Street. You will need to show your passport. I don't believe there is any place you can drive over the green line, so you may need to arrange transportation on either side.

See Wikipedia for full account of border crossings from Republic of Cyprus into the so-called Turkish Republic of Cyprus. True, the only pedestrian crossings are in Nicossia, but there are multiple crossing points for drivers. Be informed that some rental car contracts do not allow you to take their cars into the north. Also, car insurance from the south is not in force in the north. You must purchase a separate policy (usually available at the crossing point). Walking or driving, it's best to have the passport stamp on a separate piece of paper, though Republic of Cyprus is much more relaxed about this than they used to be. The easiest way to cross might be to walk over at Ledra St in Nicosia and hire a local taxi for transport.

We are presently in Cyprus and learning a lot about where to go and how and where (that we had no idea about before). Luckily we befriended Marios Georgiou of Guided Tours Cyprus who is incredibly helpful and worth spending time with on one of his tours. You can reach him at http://guidedtourscyprus.com
