BEEN offered the chance to visit this area but, I'm ashamed to say, I know nothing about it at all. Is it worth a go? I've heard that it's pretty laid-back and quiet, which suits this fortysomething who is not going to be hanging about in nightclubs. If anyone has been and can offer any advice, I'd be grateful.

I think every place has something worth seeing. I live in Cyprus (Greek part, just moved two months ago for work) and although I must say I was generally disappointed (knowing it's one of the big vacation spots in Europe and also being spoiled by having a house on the Croatian coast), there are many things that are pretty and interesting. Haven't been to the North much yet, just to Kyrenia and Turkish part of Nicosia, but everyone says the best beaches are there. And, unless you go to Paphos and Ayia Napa in July and August, you won't definitely find too many discos and nightclubs. If you get a car, you can see most of the island in a few days. Kyrenia is only 20 minutes drive from Nicosia, the capital, which can be a nice day trip. Crossing from Turkish into Greek part of the island is not a problem, just have your passport with you.
Troodos mountains and little villages are so far our favorite.
Kyrenia has a pretty old harbour, and some rather ugly big hotels on the outskirts. Bellapais is a little village on the hill above Kyrenia with an old abbey and wonderful views.
THANKS for that. I may give it a go, it's a toss-up between Cyprus and Dubai/Qatar at the moment. I fear, mind you, that if I do go I may well end up in one of those ugly hotels you mention!
