when my wife and i are visiting turkey in early may, we plan to fly to north cyprus for a week. we have about 3-4 day of our vacation unplanned and are wondering if south cyprus is much different from the north and worth spending the extra time.

We sell tours & vacations in North Cyprus and there certainly is enough to do there for at least 3/4 days.
You might also have problems crossing the border to to the out as the Greek Cypriots (unless you have an EU passport) can be a little difficult with travellers coming from the North.
South Cyprus has more tourist tat but also has more tourist facilities.
crossing the border is harder but possible.
English is spoken in both areas, note that brit expats are the third biggest population on the Island and the second in the south
