Normandy Where to stay?

Normandy Where to stay?
Hi, We are in early stage of planning atrip to Normandy. What is the best area to stay for 4-5 days for visiting the area? We will have a car and want to visit the beaches, St michel and other sites in this area. Would like to stay in one place and travel around each day.Not looking for specific name of hotel at this point just a general idea of which town would be most conveniet for day trips. Thanks

Bayeux is a good center to see most of Normandy - and is a cute town with fabulous museum if the famous tapestry depicting norman invasion in 1066. but is kind of far from Mt St michel for a day trip. It can be done but you will be at the Mt when it is most crowded (think mobs elbow to elbow everywhere - and timing may not be right to see dramatic tides). If possible I would do a night at Mt St M.

I agree with nytraveler. Stay in Bayeux which provides easy day trips to much of Normandy, lovely lodgings and very good restaurants. Bayeux is a charming town and the tapestry is a must see.
Stay for 4 nights and drive west to Mt. St. Michel for the 5th night.

We have visited Normandy twice (2004 with oldest granddaughter, 2011 with youngest granddaughter) and both times we chose to split our time between Bayeux and Etretat. We really liked the contrast between Upper and Lower Normandy. Even though we would have loved to spend a night at or near MSM, we decided to see it once as a day trip from Bayeux (long but doable) and once as a stop on our way to Bayeux.
I agree with nytraveler and mamcalice that Bayeux is an excellent location and I know you want to stay in one place but I wanted to throw in Etretat as something to consider - our youngest granddaughter rated it tied with Paris as her favorite place in France.
