No luck for the Buck!!! Looks like the Euro is going to soar!
The hope that interest rates in Europe would drop which would put a halt on the acceleration of the Euro have been squashed today!!! Its sad news for the green back and lousy for us travellers. Costa Rica and Argentina sound better and better. But damn! I miss Spain!!!! The US just doesnt care how low the dollar could fall but I do. I have a right to complain, bitch and whine about!!! At least that doesnt cost anything!!!

This topic has got to win the award for most posts with the same topic but worded differently. Write a letter to the US President instead of complaining here. It might accomplish something. (insert snicker here).
I think it's bad too. My Paris trip just keeps getting more expensive but the choice is either do your trip or don't go. Well or write GWB.

He can forge ahead with a desired trip and spend a measly few hundred bucks more than originally anticipated, forge ahead with a desired trip and downsize the scope/level that was originally anticipated, or not go on the desired trip and whine till the cows come home.
He says "but damn, I miss Spain." I have to wonder to what degree someone really misses (presumably loves) a place if they can't be creative enough to figure out a way to travel there. It's like saying that if the exchange rate never ever gets better - then too bad, I'll never be able to return to my beloved destination again in this lifetime.

I believe the question was what could GWB do about it, not what could the original poster do? GWB could:
1) Call up the OP's National Guard unit and give him a one-year all-expenses paid vacation.
2) Add the OP to the unemployment rolls, thus settling the question of whether he can afford to travel.
3) Institute a national three-strikes policy, with life imprisonment for anyone who posts the same complaint three times or more.

90 to 95% of USA citizens do not have passports. European or International travel is of little interest to most Americans. Even though general tourist travel numbers are high, the numbers are actually of business travellers or day trippers. Consequently few are concerned about dollar exchange rates. The coin has two sides..Europeans are enjoying the high value of their euro.

While it is true that most people don't travel to Europe, the fact is the weakened dollar is not good for consumers in so far as anything that is imported into the country like oil, some raw materials becomes more expensive which raises prices (one of the reasons, not the only reason, gasoline prices are going up again).
Part of the problem, by no means the only problem, is the current administration keeps giving off subtle signals that it doesn't mind the weaker dollar which is presumably good for big business in terms of exporting American goods. It is also helpful to a core constituency of the Republicans who own homes and see their mortgage rates remaining very low. We cut rising interest rates the Republicans will tell us on the upcoming campaign trail. So in that regard, the administration doesn't believe there is anything terribly wrong with the "orderly retreat" as one economist put it of the US dollar.
Could the dollar be somewhat stabilized where it is by actions of the US government? Probably but again this is not something that is agreable to the current administration.
It is a fact of economic and travel life that even here, politics can rear its ugly head for better or for worse.

Wow, another "the dollar is falling" whine. What a surprise. Reminds me of that movie - Ground Hog Day. Over and over again without an end in sight.
If the falling dollar is helping the stock market rally, then let that baby fall! And, yes, I, like milions of other Americans of both politcal parties, re-financed my house saved a bundle each month on interest.

I hope you're not referring to my post as a whine. While I have my own political views (the L word might describe them) I was very careful in this post to play it down the middle. I reread the post and I think it is balanced and says nothing that is not common knowledge to economists. At no point in that post did I say or even imply one thing is good or not.
Ultimately, all that was meant is that it is indeed a political issue that has consequences for travellers and non travellers alike. Draw whatever conclusions you wish about what is right or what is wrong. None of them are present in that particular post.
