Nice - What to do? Help please

Hi Friends,

Im new to the forum and have been reading quite alot as i plan to travel to barcelona and Nice. Im really confused on what to do in Nice and how can i go on about buying tickets etc? Are there special trusted website to buy tickets?

What are the MUST do for Nice?

i plan to be there on the 24th April for 4 nights only before going over to Spain.

Your help is appreciated.

Do you have a guide book? What are your interests?

Some of the things I would do in Nice would be explore the old town, maybe shop a bit there and around the Place Massena, walk the promenade and have lunch at a seaside restaurant, go to the Matisse and Chagall museums (no need to pre-book), maybe take the little train tour around the city and up to the Castle Hill overlook. You can also walk up there or take the elevator.

If you're interested in Roman Nice, there are excellent excavations next to the Matisse museum.

Very easy to take trips along the coast to Cannes, Antibes, Monte Carlo (not my fave but very simple to do) Trains and buses are frequent and cheap. You can also travel up into the hills, St Paul de Vence is
touristy but very pretty. Again, no need to pre-book, just show up in time to buy your ticket AND validate the ticket if you see (usually) yellow validation machines on the platform.

Here are many more suggestions:

excellent thanks for sharing

I just want to make sure if there is anything i would need to pre-book in advance then i would rather do it now like you do when you go to Rome etc..i dont want to spend most of the time in queues

Any other suggestions would be appreciated?
Not sure if they have water activities and then to do in the sea side, that would be nice...

I've never booked anything in advance, in the south of France, even in July. Never saw any queues. End of April will be quiet.

Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence is interesting if you like modern art.

End of April will not be swimming weather. You can certainly walk on the beach - but in europe the only places with possible swimming weather then are southern Spain and possibly Crete (not sure). Hope you did not plan on a lot of beach time.

You can get lucky with the weather, and go to the beach, but the sea will still be very cold.

Well telecompro, I don't know where you are from, but Nice, southern france in general is not tropical, meaning it has winter, spring etc, its not always summer. It may be sunny and pleasant in April , but its not swimming weather. Same with Barcelona.

If you really had wanted a beach type holiday you should have looked a bit more carefully at average weather in your destinations for your visit time. It will likely be pleasant for walking about though...

I suggest a day trip to Monaco, its only 1 euro to take the local bus, the scenery is amazing on way there and back , and Monaca does have some interesting sites. We visited Monaco in the morning and stopped at Eze sur Mer on way back for lunch, but this was in the summer I suggest taking train back and stopping in Eze ville.

She meant Eze VILLAGE ( up the hill vs Eze-sur-Mer by the water ). I recommend it too.

Nice doesn't have the same kind of blockbuster tourist draws like the Eiffel Tower or Uffizi in Florence that you need to buy tickets ahead due to long lines.

There's a lot to do in and around Nice. A good guide book will help, and you may find my TR helpful:

The bus goes along the coast and to most of the places mentioned and it is a BARGAIN! 1E and they run frequently. My very favorite Nice excursion was Villa Euphrisi - between Nice and Monaco. I had no interest in Monaco but Villa Euprhrisi and the nearby area were wonderful. Good audio-guide and amazing gardens. Antibes is also very nice, sandy beach in case you get lucky with the weather. St. Paul de Vence was a lovely village, very different than the coastal area. - again, accessible by the 1E local bus.
