Nice hotel around $200USD Rome

My husband and I are planning a trip to Rome in October. Any suggestions for a decent hotel around $200USD that is both convenient to sites and convenient to the train to FCO?

Thanks!

Kasi

We stayed at the Hotel Alimandi Vaticano near the Vatican. We walked or took the metro to most sites we wanted to see. the hotel isvery nice. Rooms are small but the breakfast is exceptional. Full buffet. Also, they provide a car service to the airport for 10 euros per person.

Hi K,

We haven't stayed there yet, but we have reservations at www.hotelmaikol.com/ which is at Piazza Vitorio Emanuele II, which is a metro stop.

It is several minutes walk from the Termini station.

I haven't stayed yet either, but have reservations at http://www.hotelraffaello.it/ in September for 145 euros/night including breakfast....seems to be about 10 minutes from Termini train station and Colosseum.....lots of good feedback on TripAdvisor....

Personally I would not make being located close to termini for access to FCO the deciding factor in choosing a hotel. This is not something you will do everyday and far better IMO to find a nice location where you can enjoy the local area each day and evening. I personally find the are near Termini charmless in a city where there are much better options. I also would not stay near the Vatican...JMO...as it is only convenient for the Vatican.

Daphne Inn or Daphne Inn Veneto (not full service but very well regarded), Hotel Julia, Albergo Santa Chiara, Albergo Cesari might all be within your budget considering the current exchange rate which is the best I have seen in years. All are in the historic center.

I could not agree more. Although there are one or two luxury hotels nearby, the area around Termini is one of the last places I would look for a hotel in Rome. That is not because it is dangerous; it is just very unappealing as compared with other areas where hotels are plentiful.

The Raffaelo is the sister of the Albergo Senato. I recommended it to a friend who leads small groups of museum personnel to Rome; it is now her favorite Rome base for these tours. While it is convenient to Termini station, it is in Monti, which is much nicer than the station environs.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We aren't necessarily wanting to stay near FCO, but don't want it to be a huge hassle to get to the airport the day we depart. So a direct or nearly direct route to the airport would be best.

Thanks!

Check out the Hotel Aberdeen on Via Torino. It is listed in Frommers,Rick Steves and gets fab results on Tripadvisor. I have been going to it for years and cannot say enough good things about the staff, the hotel, location and price! It is a block from Piazza Repubblica metro, buses galore on Via Nationale, can walk anywhere as it is very safe and near the opera house and when you stay there you feel as though you are with family-great breakfast and help in touring around. The prices are wonderful for Rome-usually well under $200 a night in high season. Good luck!
As someone who flys international for one of the US airlines and lays over in Rome alot-staying over in the Vatican area is not a good idea unless you are concentating your interests there.

You can hire a limo to take you to the airport for €40. (The price is controlled, so don't let anyone charge you more.) I am sure your hotel can arrange it. It's a very common thing, and it's great because they pick you up at your hotel and drop you off at the terminal, with no stops in between, and no struggle with luggage.

In October of 2004 my wife and I spent 8 nights at Hotel Aventino on the Aventine Hill. It's in a residential neighbourhood, quiet and only a 5 minute walk to main streets and metro/restaurants. The Forum and Collisum were 15 minute walks, Trevi fountain and Piazza Navone about 20 minutes and we walked to the Vatican in about 45 minutes. I believe it's still in your budget range and would stay there again if I'm ever back in Rome. Breakfast (continental) was included and they arranged a shuttle pickup to the airport at a reasonable price. Tripadvisor has excellent ratings as well.

Enjoy.

Agree with the others who say it's not necessary to have easy access to the train to FCO. It's only one ride out of a whole stay in Rome and you can do it in a taxi for 40 euro with no hassle.

I like the Hotel Modigliani.

I do agree that the best location for first-time tourists to Rome is the area around the Piazza Navona.

However, I do not agree that the area WEST of Termini, the neighbourhood around Santa Maria Maggiore, is a bad choice. You have easy access to the Metro from this area. You can even walk to the Colosseum and Forum if you walk down the Via Merulana and cut through the Parco Triano.

I agree with Dutyfree that the Vatican area is not a wise choice.

Yes, that area is Monti and it is where the Hotel Raffaelo is located. Good restaurants around there, too. Much better than nearer the station...

We've stayed on a quiet residential street a short walk from the Piazza Navona and found it a very convenient location for walking to all of the sites. We prefer walking and found the location ideal.

We rented an apartment that was very spacious and comfortable. We were out and about early in the morning and felt very comfortable walking around until the small hours of the next morning.

Coffee shop and grocer nearby. Easy walk to Vatican. Twenty minutes to Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Forum and Colosseum a little further.

We prefer the space and privacy of an apartment or house when we travel. One of us is a night owl which is impossible to accommodate comfortably in a hotel room.

We arranged for a shuttle to the airport while visiting Rome. (We flew into Venice and drove with several stops before reaching Rome.) We saw a sign on a van and got a card from the driver. We had planned on a taxi but decided to schedule the van. It worked perfectly.

Enjoy your travels!

We stayed at the Hosianum Place, a small newly renovated hotel in a 16th Century building. It's in a great location, within walking distance of all the sights and near the Piazza Venetia. It is within your budget. We selected the Hosianum Palace because it has a wonderful rooftop garden on which breakfast is served and you get great rooftop views. You can also have drinks up there in the evening or read a book. I highly recommend it. Check out their website: www.hosianum.com

Stayed at the Senato a year ago and it was just one night at the end of my trip before flying back out of FCO. It was a 7 AM flight so I had to be there earlier. Not even sure the trains run around 5 AM, which is when I would have had to leave to get to the airport on time.

I booked a shared shuttle through Viator and it was like $20-30, one of the few things which was reasonably-priced compared to other cities. Had to leave very early and I missed their breakfast (they said on the web site they'd pack you a breakfast the night before if you had to check out early but the clerk didn't know anything about that).

I think my friend stayed at the Ripa Hotel and she told me it was wonderful. The staff was polite and the location was a good distance from the main attractions. I believe it's in the Trastevere area of Rome. Check it out here:

Your budget is a nice amount so I know you'll find a great place. I hope the two of you have an amazing time!

I don't know details or costs, but one night when we were wandering we went behind the Piazza Colonna with the column of Marcus Aurelius and there were 2 hotels there overlooking a very QUIET square. Quiet within a few blocks of Trevi Fountain, Via del Corso, Pantheon etc is very rare - I would definitely look into staying there in the future.

We did stay near the vatican - actually a 10 minute walk from Ottavanio and we were fine. We returned home almost every day for a rest and went back out. We liked being in a real neighborhood.
