It's helpful to have a specific price range when you say 'cheap' and 'relatively inexpensive'. Also anything you especially want when you say 'nice clean'. As with any major european city finding someplace centrally located vs cheap vs nice is a but tricky.

Hotel Springhouse has decent quad rooms and is walkable to the Vatican area. We took the metro from the train station and with their handy directions had a couple blocks walk to the hotel, a bit steep. They had bicycles for our use and the hotel was in a nice residential neighborhood. Not walkable to Navona if I remember correctly but we found the metro very convenient and easy and a short trip. I think they had a deal at the time that if we stayed 4 nights we got a free van ride to the airport. Website is probably hotelspringhouse.com

Second time I've recommended it today, but try the Beehive.(It's near Termini Station.) It's owned by two Americans. It's site seems to be down, but I think Rick Steves recommends them. In addition to their hotel/hostel, they have a few apartments. You rent the room in the apt., and share the kitchen, living room, etc. I don't know how many folks each apartment holds. (I'd guess 4-6.)
