You really would not want to stay in many of the very cheap places....

Despite preconceptions from many people, Britain is quite a large country with a big population, so narrowing things down is best.

I like a small city with nature beauty.
Because of travelling alone and safety, I don't prefer to sparsely populated place.
I really love natural and beautiful place, just like Bar Harbor, Maine.

England is very safe as it is quite a heavily populated island.

I have just stuck to the main island, but of course Norther Ireland is also a part of the UK.

You wont be able to see all but that should get you going...of course there are tonnes I have missed. I dont recall how much time you have but a you could do a nice two week trip with London (with a day trip or two to Bath or Oxford, or Stonehenge/Salisbury etc), train to York for a few days and then end in Edinburgh or vice versa. This could be done all on public transport. Thats just to give you an idea.

Remember 2 nights somewhere is only 1 full day!

Hahaha - I am not trying to get technical - my point is that it is very safe for a solo female traveller in general.

PS - I live in London and I am British and I am well aware of the differences between England, Scotland, UK, Wales, Great Britain. I was just typing quickly and wanted to get the point across that safety shouldnt be a main concern.

My husband and I are trying something different this Oct. We've booked a "garden cottage" in Linlithgow, Scotland, for a week. The price is very reasonable, and it's within walking distance of the train station, and lots of shops, restaurants, places of interest. A friend did the exact same thing a few years ago, and she loved it. She's a single woman who usually travels solo. Her experience sounded so nice that we're staying in the same cottage as she did. I see online that there such cottages for rent all over Europe and all over the UK. Cottages4you.com is a good place to start looking if you think it might be for you. Good luck.

I travellled alone in the UK. You will feel quite comfortable. I recommend Bath, Oxford and York. The trains are convenient from London. Bath is beautiful in the evening when you can go to the Roman Baths. It was very crowded during the day and I was glad I could visit in the evening. You mention you like nature. If you can get to the Cotwolds, you can walk from village to village. Lots of fun! Let us know where you decide to go!

If you're willing to travel away from London, hop the train and head to Woolacombe and Ilfracombe on the coast of Devon. Spectacular!! I stayed in Ilfracombe in a B&B called The Towers. It was superb. I was single and travelled solo, and had no fears for my safety.

Also the towns surrounding Woolacombe and Ilfracombe - Braunton, Croyde, Mortehoe, are just beautiful...

Oh, and I forgot talk about the beaches there. They're great!
