We have a 4 day layover in London before we depart for 2 weeks in the Netherlands. We want to avoid overspending on this leg of our trip. Is getting away from the big city a good idea, we would like to experience the culture and take in some nice sights. Does any one have advice on what would be a fairly cost effective way to achieve this? Where should we go? Should we stay in London and then embark for the countryside or will we have enough time in 4 days to achieve this? <BR>Thanks for your suggestions.

Blackpool's a lovely spot for shagging. Beware those British condoms from vending machines--they only take one pound (!).

i think london is an expensive city in general, but there are some fairly reasonable B&B's in the city..check the fodors listing.. that will help. <BR>with only 4 days there, you should be able to take in most of the major sights around london..if you want to travel a little farther out.. get a britrail pass .. that wil allow you to take a few day trips without costing a bunch. <BR>happy honeymoon!

if you have never been to london before, take advantage of the days. the british museum if free and fantastic. for about 15 dollars take a hop on hop off tour of london. you can get off at sites all day. if you want to save a little on hotels stay in the suburbs of london. i have stayed in the days inn just across the thames for about 100 dollars a night. you can also go to windsor, canterbury,and many other nearby towns by train. where are you going in netherlands, i was there in may and have some good places to see. email me if you like

Robert: I'd definitly take advantage of the time in London!!! Hotels are not cheap, but you can make the rest of the trip very inexpensive. Ethnic food and pub grub are cheap and there are a bunch of amazing museums that are free (the British Library, British Muesum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and lots of smaller places). There are great walking tours (check out London Walks) that are only ~$8 for a great 2 hour walk. Plus, lots of the museums are free for the last hour or hour and a half of the day (Museum of London, Victoria and Albert, etc). Although you have to pay to tour Westminster Abby or St. Paul's Cathedral, you can sit in a service or organ recital for free. Several other churches (such as St. Martin's in the Field) offer free lunchtime concerts. And then there are the cheap theatre tickets, wandering the food courts at Harrods, Speaker's Corner .....
