New Year's Eve in Rome...is it something special?

I have friends that just booked trip to Italy that will include New Year's Eve in Rome.

Their travel agent told them that New Year's Eve in Rome is fantastic. Is that accurate??

I just did a search here by putting "New Years in Rome" and got several threads relating to that. You might want to try that.

Doesn't the Pope speak in Rome on New Year's Day? I've heard this and I'm hoping it's true, as we are also going to be there at this time. As for New Year's Eve, everything I've heard is that Rome is the place to be (as far as Italy goes) on that night.

I'm going to be in Rome for New Year's Eve as well and am looking for something unique to do. I don't want to go where there are huge crowds of tourists, though. I'm looking for a special event like an opera or concert. Does anyone have suggestions? Also, I'm also curious to know if the pope speaks on New Year's Day as well, although I'm sure if I ask the concierge at the hotel they will know.

I'm curious to know what others are planning to do in Rome for New Year's Eve - please share your ideas with me. Thank you.

Well.....your question gave me a good laugh. Sure there are lots of great parties. When we were there, our hotel recommended a nice club with dinner and a show. We had a ball, then....

What we didn't know is that at midnight, Rome residents throw glass, junk, and all kinds of stuff out of their windows into the streets.
We tried to get a cab about 1 AM and none of the companies had cabs out because of the danger from people throwing things into the street.
We walked around until about 3 when we were finally able to get a cab....what a night!!
