New Year's Eve in Paris:at the Champs Elysees

Hi All,

We arrived into Paris from Houston a few hours late. End of the Christmas trip "home", and back at "home" in Paris. It was around freezing, and we had major jet lag, but, darnit, we came back a day early so we could do New Year's Eve at the Champs Elysees. So, we put on coats, scarves, and gloves, and hopped the metro.

I read later that there were a half million people there, and it's easy to believe, since the width of the Champs Elysees was covered in people from the Arc de Triomphe to about a mile back.

Picture taking was not optimal, as I couldn't find an elevated place to sit a tripod, as least not a place that was not covered with spectators. Anyway, the show was pretty cool - a high-resolution light show on the arch itself, starting around 11 PM, and then fireworks starting at midnight. The crowd was in a good mood. A lot of people I talked to said they didn't go because they were afraid there would be another truck attack like the ones in Nice last year, and at the German Christmas market this year. Those were certainly on our minds, but we can't let the terrorists win! Thankfully, all went well.

You can see the spectacular photos and more here:

Comments very much appreciated. Fodors readers are the nicest group I've seen anywhere online!

Enjoy!
Vick

I like any person who tell me I'm (belonging to a group) nice ^^

Honestly, your photos are great. I watched the footage of Champs Elysees New Year Eve on TV and it looks amazing. I've well remembered your blog.

Your beautiful photos have planted the seed - a plan for me to climb the arch (for the first time) when I'll be in Paris this coming May - trip #9 to my favorite city.
Inspiring!

Looks pretty good, at least they get the sense of moment, even if half of them is people doing selfies.

FYI, I think it may be illegal to use a tripod in Paris, at least in some public place. I might be wrong, just sort of remember that, as you need a license to do that.

What are those words that appear to be running around the top of the Arc? In the last photo, they look Greek.

Tripods are legal in all public places. Only museums require a permit.

The words on the Arc are simply 'Happy New Year' in a changing multitude of languages. I saw it a year or two ago, and they used at least 30 or so languages.

I have to admit that I sat at home and watched the fireworks on television, even though I am only about 15 minutes away by metro. But I have been there in person at least half a dozen times -- if it were my first time, I would most definitely want to see it all in the flesh.

Your photos are very nice, VGF.

Vick, I always need an extra half hour when I check a new post by you, as I inevitably wander through your photo archive and revisit your amazing Greenland etc photos.
Lovely fireworks shots too, of course.

Hey Travelchat! That's what I always hope - that my photos will inspire people to go see these places for themselves - so that's fantastic! Hope you have a great time.

I just had a look at your gorgeous photos...then went to your blog archives! I could spend all day here! Greenland, snowshoeing in Italy. I am headed back to your site for more! Truly brilliant photography!

Those photos are spectacular. Now, I would sooner die than be out in the masses for New Years Eve (not my thing, more a quiet, cozy night with Champagne) but it's quite a sight to see!

Thanks Kansas! Glad to hear you went exploring my older photos too. There 107 articles there now. Can't believe here are so many! This is going to be our travelogue after our years living in Europe are over.

Thanks tuanbale! Thanks for the follow-up kerouac - I would have answered the same - people use tripods all over Paris all the time. I wonder if a permit might be required for a full-sized movie camera on tripod? Like in Hollywood. I have seen multiple big-time film crews around, with trucks, and even cameras on tracks.
