There is a lot to do in Vienna for New Year's. Balls, concerts, etc. In fact, Vienna may be the ultimate place for an elegant New Year's. The problem is, many/most/all of the events are booked months and even years in advance. Give it up for this year and try again for next or the year after.

Please don't give up and come to Vienna!
There is the famous Silvesterpfad (New Year's eve trail) in the city center. Outside on the streets there is all kind of music, food stalls, festive tents... There is no entrance fee, there are no tickets, just join the crowd! Many Italians will be there...
For an overview, take a look at http://www.wien.info/cmssearch.asp?I...amp;PageFrom=1 and http://www.wien.info/cmssearch.asp?I...mp;PageFrom=11

Hi,
We spent New Year's Eve of 2000 in Vienna. We did not do anything fancy for New Year's Eve. We went to concerts etc. on other nights. On NYE there is there are waltz lesson in front of the Rat House. Then everyone joins in and dances with their coats and gloves on. There is a big screen and you can see yourself and others waltzing. Also there is a tall slide that you go down to "slide into the new year". There are stalls everywhere selling champange and hot wine, in real glass, not plastic. Keep your glass and mug to refill. You can purchase whole bottles of champange. There are a lot of food stalls also, selling sausages with mustard etc. At midnight there are fireworks. It appears that everyone is out in the center of town. It was very festive and we had a fabulous time. I would recommend it. Others I talked to, did go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant.Either way you will have a great time. Enjoy
