New Years eve dilemma: Stockholm or Copenhagen?

Looking to spend 5 days 4 nights in either Stockholm or Copenhagen for New Years. We are 2 females in our 20s. Not looking to make a specific reservation for new years eve but would rather just explore. We are pretty laid back and both flight tickets are about the same price so, we can't choose!

Both are lovely cities though very expensive! I studied abroad in Copenhagen not too long ago so I have a soft spot for it but I thought Stockholm was more beautiful by the water (I went in March so it's probably a different experience in the winter). If you go to Copenhagen, it's a small enough city that you can explore it in 2-3 days and then take side trips to Malmo, Sweden (less than 30 min away by train) or Kronberg Castle. Transportation is quite easy in Copenhagen.

i know both, I lived in Stockholm for two years.

It is one of the most beautiful places in the world - albeit cold - and in winter it is fabulous.

Definitely my choice. Sweden is a wonderful culture that is highly unique.

I spent New Years in Copenhagen in 2007 and it was nuts so if you want to party, that's a good place. We didn't get to Stockholm until a few days later so can't speak to that.

There were fire works all over the place, the square was especially active, and the Danes were drunk as can be. We walked through the square the next morning, heading to my nieces apartment, everything was closed pretty much, and there were bottles everywhere. There was an empty bottle of Kaluah and I can't imagine what that poor guy felt like that morning.

Dinner was very expensive on New Years. My niece was supposed to have checked out some places so we could reserve a table, and she forgot. Our hotel found us a reservation at an Argentinian restaurant. Go figure. They had a fire pit in the middle of the room with Mary's little lamb stretched out on a rack cooking over the fire. If you see Mary, tell her the little guys not coming home. LOL Cost was 150.00 per person. I have never spent that much on a meal. We were lucky to be eating so didn't complain.

So, I think you'd have a good time. I loved being there in the winter and we were lucky because they had a really unusual amount of snow and it was very very cold.

Oh, Tivoli will be open the days before New Years for the Christmas market. It is really pretty at night.

I have been to both cities and I believe Stockholm is much better than Copenhagen. Copenhagen is the most boring Capital of Western Europe, it only hase a nice Canal called Nyhavn and the Hippy colony of Christiania. As for the Mermaid... It is a ridiculously small statue and not even beautiful.

I've been to both Stockholm and Copenhagen several times. I enjoyed both. Everybody speaks English and you can't have a bad time, unless someone steals your drink in a bar. Beer and booze is very expensive up there so if you drink bring in the max duty free.

I suggest that you look at taking an overnight Silja Line ferry from Stockholm back and forth to Helsinki if you are party types. I've been on those ferries several times and they are great. There is a huge buffet style dinner available (take the second seating to minimize the number of kids around) and the price includes unlimited beer and wine. The bars have live entertainment and dancing.
