Hi all - I am going back to Paris for a week in early March; haven't been there since Spetember and am wondering what's new. In particular, any new restaurants to try not far from Odeon metro stop.

It would help if you specify type of cuisine and price range. One place I like in the general area is Ze Kitchen Galerie on Rue des Grands Augustins. I have two dinners here meals here on two recent trips to Paris and have been pleased. It is not, however, a traditional Parisian bistro; the chef was named Chef of the Year by Gault Millau a few years back:

I LOVE ze kitchen galerie - I always eat there on my first night in Paris - so...twice a year at least. I always get a warm greeting - by name - when they see me arriving. A wonderful way to start my trip.

We've eaten twice at Le Lutin en la jardin on Rue Git le Coeur. Very reasonable. Get the scallops. Last night we ate at Le Souffle in the 1st on Rue Mont Tabor (sp?). Delicious and E30 for 3 courses. More to follow when we return home.

Do the restaurants on the list require reservations, or could we just drop in? We'll probably be eating early by Paris standards, so I was hoping we could just walk in, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

I am not sure I would use Ira's post above as my definitive guide to eating in the area. It seems to be a just a listing of all kinds of places including pizza and crepes and a well-known ice cream vendor; several of the places listed get rather dim reviews elsewhere.

Many excellent restaurants in the area are not on the list. At the actual restaurants you ought to reserve if dining at peak dining hours. I would supplement this list with some further research if you are looking for a great meal.

Ira's list is a bunch of different things and I think are some of this favorite places, but the restaurants I know on there are not new, they've been around many years. So if you are looking for new restaurants, I don't think that list will work. Maybe there is some new one on there, but I know many of them and they are very old. I wouldn't go to dinner at some of them, either, like Cafe de la Mairie. I've eaten there for breakfast/lunch, etc., it's just a very crowded and popular cafe. It's been around at least 50-75 years. Okay as a cafe, but it's really popular for its location and history (think Deux Magots, etc) Creperie de Josselin is a good Breton crepe restaurant, but it's not near Odeon or in the 6th arr, and is also pretty old (it's near Montparnasse Tower).

we made a reservation for Le Souffle, but did see others walk in. Le Lutins we walked by, our apt. was two doors away, about 2 hours before we wanted dinner reservations. Hope that helps. Also, I would get a Pudlo's Paris restaurant book. It's a great reference.

Actually, the thread I started asked about NEW restaurants, - as I was in Paris in September. And while budget restaurants are always welcome, I didn't mean to restrict my inquiry to that. Unforch, my French friends aren't foodies, whereas one major purpose of my Paris visits is eating good stuff! Also, as I travel solo, and often eat solo, dinner is often the evening's entertainment- I am not looking for a meal that is over in half an hour; I like to eat at around 9 or 10 PM and while I love to walk, I don't much like walking alone at night in unfamiliar neighborhoods, but any resto that's very near a Metro stop usually works for me, even if it is not in "my" neighborhood.
I love all your responses so far, by the way, and please keep 'em coming.

Shellio- forgot to say Le Cameleon is one of my favorites - and very near a Pilates studio, Elements, that I go to sometimes. I've only been for lunch. What's the ambiance at dinner?
Also near there (Vavin Metro)are Wadja and Sensing, - the latter will break the bank, but less so at lunch. Probably countless others, but not known to me yet.

Le Cameleon changed chef and management a while ago. I had dinner there in October, and while I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away. It was rather quiet, no "sizzle" if that's what you're looking for. It seemed to have less personality than the previous incarnation which felt like a real neighborhood bistro. I'm also not a major fan of Wadja. I've been meaning to try Le Timbre for years. It's nearby on rue Saint Beuve.
