Neuschwanstein this Saturday morning-- reservations needed?

I have read through the websites and some trip reports on this forum and am still unsure as to whether I need to reserve for Neuschwanstein tickets for this coming Saturday am. We will be arriving in Fussen Friday afternoon (5:00-ish?) and are currently planning on doing Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Saturday morning. Originally we wanted to keep our options open in terms of time due to the weather forecast, but now it seems that Sat. morning would probably work best for us. Does anyone have direct experience with the crowds at this time of year and/or reserving? Should we reserve or can we just arrive as soon as they open to get the first tickets? Thanks so much in advance!

Neuschwanstein is done by tour only - not individually. And you will need a tour that is done in English(unless you can manage in some other language). To be sure to get on a specific tour (and language) you should reserve in advance - esp in August on a weekend.

And I think trying to do both in one morning is very aggressive.

We were there mid July 2010. It was very crowded. We had pre purchased tickets over the internet. There were two windows, same day purchases with a long line and pre purchased tickets, specified time/English with no line.I assume those walk up purchasers were assigned tour times later in the day. I talked to a local who told me he always pre purchased tickets in the high season.

The purchase over the internet was a two day deal. We submitted the purchase form and they got back to us the next day. We had to print out our purchase document.

If you want to go to both castles you can. They have it timed so that you go to Hohenschwangau first, and then Neuschwanstein. It is very well organized. We completed both castles in the morning and then had a surprisingly good lunch at the hotel/restaurant half way down the hill. We had stayed there 20 years ago with our children. This time I was with our children and with their children (our grandchildren). It was quite special.

Enjoy.

Glad you are a fan of Croatia.
My Dad was born there in the village of Brbinj, island of Dugi Otok (Long Island) in 1898. I first visited there in 1964. It is a very special place for me.
I first visited Neuschwanstein in 1964.
