DH and I are travelling through southern Germany in Sep 2012. We arrive in Lindau on Wednesday night, Sep 5th (driving from Freiburg). I had planned to visit Neuschwanstein on Thursday afternoon, but I see that it is in scaffolding this summer! I had planned to continue on to Munich to stay on Thursday night (allowing Fri, Sat and Sunday in Munich - we fly home on Monday). Is it worth visiting Neuschwanstein with the scaffolding? Or, should we plan something different? I don't expect to return any time soon. I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

i would say go see it anyway - how many of your friends have pics of the castle WITH scaffolding! you also visit Hohenschwangau (sp?) "next door" and then if you go up to the marienbruck (sp?) bridge, that is also a nice view. The website says northern and western facade are covered in scaffolding -- someone may know if this affects the view from the bridge. Anyway, the tour inside is worth seeing (IMO).
I agree you should go for it - you say you don't think you will return any time soon. And I believe much of the charm of N. is in the rooms inside. I also think it's very likely that at least some of the major sights on any trip to Europe will be afflicted with scaffolding, or portions closed due to renovations.
I went out of my way last summer (hiking from the train depot) to see Burg Eltz in Germany and longed to photograph it, only to turn a corner and see the entire edifice covered in sheeting and scaffolding. If I had it to do over, I would have instead used the day to visit other towns on the Mosel, which I missed.
I visited Neuschwanstein in '07. It's a beautiful sight, and much more impressive from a distance than close up (IMO), and couldn't imagine that it would hold much appeal at all covered in scaffolding. I would skip it and visit another year when it's not covered.
N'stein is out of the way and gets far more tourists than it merits, even when it's not shrouded in scaffolding. For some impressive buildings stop on the way in Ottobeuren to see the Abbey and/or in Steingaden for the Wieskirche, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We visited Neuschwanstein in May. When we first saw it I was so disappointed to see so much scaffolding but when we got to marienbruck we were able to take beautiful photos of the castle without any scaffolding showing. The castle wasn't my favorite but I'm glad we went there. Deborah
Thanks everyone! I think we will go for it since we can get photos w/o scaffolding from the bridge. I have afternoon tickets so we'll visit Ottobeuren in the morning and then visit Weiskirche on our way to Munich late in the afternoon. It will be a busy day and we are looking forward to it!

Also, can anyone comment on whether the hike to the bridge is still OK in winter time?
