Need to prebook Galleria dell'Accademia in May?
I promise I have searched the boards, but no recent threads that I could find!
I'll be in Florence from a Sunday afternoon through a Tuesday morning in early May. I know now that the Galleria dell'Accademia will be closed on Monday (research fail on my part!), and we'll be flying into Rome and taking the train directly to Florence on Sunday. So it's possible that we could squeeze in seeing the David on Sunday afternoon/evening, but we might have to wait till Tuesday morning before we leave for Vernazza. I've looked at the web site just to see, and there are still tickets available for this week, so it seems like we could just wait and see what happens, but would May be a high enough season that we should really prebook for a Tuesday morning slot?

I've never prebooked for the Accademia, but I've never attempted to go early in the day either. I always go after lunch. The longest I had to wait in line was about 10 minutes in late June. Separate line for people with exact cash which moved fast. People needing to pay by credit card were in line a bit longer. Last trip (early Sept.), I waited a few minutes (less than five).

I agree that you can almost walk into the Uffizi or Accademia if you go two hours before closing.
Almost everyone lines up early in the morning.
Longest lines tend to be on Saturday morning.
You can walk right into the Vatican Museum after 12:30-1:00 PM.
However, it is best to get to St. Peter's by 9 AM.
You can almost always walk into Castel Sant'Angelo at any time. Doesn't seem to be a big attraction-- which is strange because you can get the BEST views of Rome from its terraces.

I do not recall passing by the Accademia when there was not a substantial line, especially in the past 10 years or so. We always book ahead no matter what time of the year we are in Florence. However, I frequently read on this forum that you can go in the late afternoon and not have to wait in a long line.

Thanks, everyone.
There's a good chance we'd have time to go on Sunday afternoon - our flight to FCO arrives at 9:45, so assuming we left the airport by 11 (we won't be checking bags), per Trenitalia we could be in Florence by 2pm or so - plenty of time if all goes according to plan, since Google puts our b&b at a ten-minute walk from the Accademia. Honestly I'd prefer to do that vs. committing ourselves to an early morning on Tuesday, since we'll be leaving town that day.
This is really my friend's thing - I was able to see the David while studying abroad in college, and I'm not a huge art buff, so I'm set. But during her study abroad semester the museum staff were on strike so she didn't get to! I'll see how she feels about it - I don't want her to miss out. Thanks!
