Need to get from Glasgow to Orvieto Italy.. train? or plane? Plz help
We are a family of 5 from the USA and will be in Scotland for the Festival. We will be traveling to Italy after a quick stop in Glasgow.. I can't seem to figure out the best way (most efficient and not ridiculously priced) to get from Glasgow to the Orvieto area.
It's about 2-3 hours north of Rome by car.. I believe....
Then I need to get from Italy to London to get back to the USA... Thanks for any suggestions

Flybe flies direct from Glasgow to Milan (then train down to Orvieto or rent a car a I guess). Might not be cheap though - depends on the dates. You might check easyJet for one-way flights back to London from Rome.

You are likely too late to get any sort of discounted fares. Your trip to Italy will certainly complicate things -- You have to get from Edinburgh to Glasgow, Glasgow to the airport, Milan or Rome to Orvieto, Orvieto to Milan or Rome, and back to London the day before your flight home.
Orvieto is super -- but definitely not a convenient 'two-fer' w/ the Edinburgh Festival

There are more or less daily Ryanair flights from Prestwick (and Edinburgh) to Pisa and Rome-Ciampino - the two nearest airports to Orvieto. Allowing 90 mins for faffing about at the Italian airport, and 90-120 mins for the drive (or, from Pisa,a train, though this can be messy), it's about 7-8 hours from central Glasgow to Orvieto Scalo, the railway station/motorway exit below the city. Plus however long it takes from there to your hotel
This close to departure in midsummer (Pisa's a major UK tourist airport), you're unlikely to get fares much below £150 each way. Possibly less back to London
It's not possible to do this from Glasgow by train in much under 36 hours each way. Actual time on trains can be cut a bit - but only by overnighting somewhere en route, increasing the elapsed time still further. The train's unlikely to be much cheaper than the plane now, and is usually a lot more

The train would take just over 24 hours, and would be the adventurous option...
Leave Glasgow around 08:00, arrive London around 12:30 ; from around £18 if you prebook at www.virgintrains.co.UK
Depart London St Pancras 14:02, arrive Paris 17:23; from £39 prebooked at www.Eurostar.com; in fact, worth trying to book Glasgow to Paris at Eurostar.com as this could be cheaper but to see Glasgow as a station you must click to enter the united kingdom version of the Eurostar website, it won't appear if you select any other country's version.
Depart Paris by sleeper 18:54, arrive Florence 07:16; from 45 euros with couchette, book at www.TGV-europe.com but if you're from the USA select Canada to avoid being bumped to Rail Europe. Take a picnic and bottle of wine onto the sleeper!
Take next train to Orvieto.
