Location for the Chateau Alpiles was very good for us. Places to visit in every direction. Loved the Chateau.

Les Bories-Gordes

We very much liked the Domaine de Valmouriane, which is off one of the roads leading up to Les Baux. Our room was on the ground floor, with a small patio; the room itself was quite large, as was the marble bathroom. The swimming pool is gorgeous, and the grounds are extensive; the gated parking is a real plus in this area.

Another option is the Château de Roussan, an 18th-century mansion in beautiful grounds. The hotel is off one of the main roads leading to/from St-Rémy. Rooms are all different; the one on the ground floor is large and updated, some others retain their original character. And plumbing.

The small restaurant does good Provençal-style food, and the staff are very pleasant. We really enjoyed our stay here, except when my husband was chased and upended by one of the resident white geese. The swans, however, had better manners.

My wife and I stayed in Mas des Carassins last year and really loved it.Just a couple minutes walk from the center of Saint remy.
would recommend the dinners there to anyone. At 31 euros per person for their guests, it is a steal! The two owners, Pierre and Miichelle, are delightful hosts. They are on sight from mid morning through dinner, which leads to a very smooth operating system.

we stayed at Mas Des Romarins in Gordes and were very happy that we chose this hotel. It was an easy walk into Gordes and perfectly situated for exploring nearby towns.

Mas Des Romarins is a partner hotel to Mas des Carassins and offers the delicious meals as well..just another wonderful choice for you to make..enjoy Provence.

We had 4 nights to spend in Provence this past September and decided to split it into two stays. We were at Mas des Carassins in St. Remy and it was a lovely place. Had the dinner one night and had dinner in town the second night and enjoyed both. Our second stay was at Le Mas Perreal in St. Saturnin. The owner, Kevin Widrow, is a frequent poster here and we very much enjoyed our stay at his lovely home. We did use this as our base to visit Gordes and Rousselin. Gordes was VERY busy when we were there so it might have been nice to stay in the town itself, but we enjoyed being "out in the country" and just stopping in the other towns. I highly recommend both hotels.

We also enjoyed Mas des Carassins in St. Remy. The room itself was a little ho-hum (I've heard that some rooms are nicer than others), but the grounds are beautiful, the hospitality was delightful, breakfast was terrific and the pool was quite nice. And the location wasn't bad either... just far enough outside of the old city to be nice and quiet at night.

owned by two artists, rooms are somewhat basic but have wonderful verandas with gardens and fig trees. On the edge of tourist area, easy walk to restuarants, shops, etc.

In Town I love L'Hotel de Images in St Remy. Situated on the main drag and has it's own car park. Once in the hotel, you won't believe you are in town, the Alpilles look down at you. there's a vegetable garden and a labyrinth and a tiny pond with ducks.

Thanks so much for all the hotel suggestions. I'm investigating them now. Underhill, Chateau Roussan looks very appealing. Is it easy to get into St Remy from there for dinner, etc?
Do you think that location would allow us to easily visit the Gordes, Roussilon, Bonnieux areas as well or will we need to move?
Ira, I loved your trip report.I've copied all of your restaurant suggestions. Since it is our first trip to Provence do you think Cadran Solaire would allow us to visit most of the above areas?

The Château de Roussan is about a 5-minute drive from St-Rémy along a road with overarching plane trees. Beautiful on a hot day!

We stayed at and enjoyed Chateau des Alpilles in 2005. Spendy, but a beautiful room and bathroom. Nice walk into the town center. Nice grounds with the big trees to just sit around under and have a glass of wine.

We also stayed at Mas des Romarins in Gordes. The view was stupendous, and we could walk to the village center--if you're in decent shape. Our room was a bit 'old', but it looked like they had a couple of newer rooms. Since this was 2005, it's also possible they have updated.

We spent 3 nights in St. Remy at Mas des Carrassins and quite liked it. If I had 5 nights, I think I would split my time between there and Gorde or somewhere in the Luberon. It's just far enough that I think splitting a five day hotel stay would be worthwhile (might be different if it were a week and you could rent a villa/apartment).
