Anyone have a recommendation for a place to stay for 3 nights in Rome that is $200 or less a night?

That's about €150, I think?

The "When" of it makes a huge difference - next month our usual place has doubles at €75, whereas in late May those same rooms cost €155....

Their rates for that period should just be within your budget - but, for grander accommodation, you may have to trade "down" on location!

you could have a look at staying in a convent - not as weird as it sounds and they tend to be cheaper.

Try the Hotel Aberdeen, near the Termini train station. Nice hotel, great staff, good location. Don't know how much it would cost when you are coming. Emailing them might get you the best rate.

Try Gens Julia or Pensione Barrett.

You can use either booking.com or venere.com to search by budget for your travel dates and then read reviews that are no older than a few weeks old for the hotels, and often as many as 600 reviews for the hotels that fit your travel needs.

Just beats the heck I think out of asking people who probably haven't stayed in a hotel in Rome in your price range during your time frame or who may not have stayed in a hotel in Rome for several years (most people rent apartments or have a favorite they return to).

Many convent stays have curfews -- and Rome is a beautiful place at night, so you might want to think twice about that.

By the way, Gens Julia and Pensione Barrett have superb locations. I really don't think you need to "trade down" on location at all.

The Hotel Fontanella Borghese offers a single room during your time frame at a rate well within your budget (including a 5% discount for booking 3 consecutive nights). I haven't stayed in a single in this hotel nor have I stayed at the hotel in late April/early May, but we've stayed at this hotel 4 times for a total of about a month over several years.

The hotel is located at the opposite end of the Via Condotti from the Spanish Steps, about halfway between the Spanish Steps and the Piazza Navona. The owner (often on-site) and her staff have been very helpful to us over the years.

I'll admit I have never stayed in a hotel while in Rome. We've always stayed with my brother in law who is a priest. Anyway, other relatives have stayed at a couple hotels close to his place. The area is very convenient. It is right by Palatine Hill and Circus Maximus and walking distance to many of the historical sites.
Residence Palazzo al Velabro (http://www.velabro.it/index.php?id=r...FbRbPAodtREARA) and the Kolbe Hotel (http://www.kolbehotelrome.com/). They both have pretty good reviews and the relatives who have stayed there were happy with their stays.

trivback - that looks like a nice place and very reasonable considering they have kitchens too.

I will be staying in a pensione near the Vatican for a week in February while i attend a language school nearby - i will report back.
