Need quick help for how to get to see Northern Lights this week

Jump to last reply

My son knows of my great respect and appreciation for the Fodors forums. I offered to check here for some quick decisions he needs to make. Thank you in advance!

He has just finished a job in Oslo and is planing on doing some travel in the country. He has until 4/5 when he will be flying from Oslo back to the U.S. He told me he booked a train ticket to head to Bergen tomorrow morning to do a trip on the fjords and he didn't book a return trip yet. He is trying to figure out if there is an affordable way for him to see the Northern Lights.

I read on the forum that the best place to try to see them that is far enough north but also still a reasonably-sized town would be Tromsø. He wants to know how to get there. He said from what he could tell the trains seem to go as far north as Bodø, but then he would need to find another way to get to Tromso. Maybe bus? Should he fly if he can find a reasonably priced flight?

The other question is whether he should try to go from Bergen or come back to Oslo first and go from Oslo? This season he said it seems like many airlines only fly to Tromso from Oslo so if he goes from Bergen, he'll have a stop in Oslo anyway.

Does this make sense? Is Tromso the best place for him to go this week to see the Northern Lights? I am sure he will be very grateful of your help. Thank you.
