Need Help With Train Travel on Ligurian Riviera
Once we arrive by ferry from Bastia, Corsica to Livero (which appear to be around 5 pm) , we need to train it to Sestri Levante, where we stay 3 days.. I've spent several fruitless hours on treinitaly website. Our train travel date is either Sept 16 or 17, depending on the train schedule that eludes me.
I'm trying to find out the schedule early in order to book hotels.

Trenitalia is in the process of adding summer schedules/fares which will run through early December. You can't purchase these yet, but schedules don't change much. Just enter a Sunday or Monday (depending on which day you are actually traveling) date within the next 7 days to get schedules/prices.

Those may be regional trains on that route and those may not always appear in Trenitalia.com unless specified? Anyway put angst to rest - lots of trains and always can get on - no need to pre-book to guarantee a seat. if regional train then there are no seat reservations - all other types of train require seat reservations which come at time of booking. Just head to the Livorno train station after docking and be on your way within an hour for sure I would think.

Like kywhisky says above these type schedules rarely change much so putting in a random date I find hourly trains from Livorno Centrale (main station) to Sestri Levante - many go direct but often also you must change once, in Chiavari, just before Sestri Levante - travel time on direct trains is about 1 h 45 min - if change needed 2 hours. these are all ES (EuroStar Italia) or IC trains so they should show up on trenitalia.com when summer schedules are loaded (often IME not until summer actually starts!) - but these schedules again rarely change. For lots of info on Italian trains check out these superb site IMO - www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com. IC trains may be considerably cheaper than ES trains - anyway all the fares are at www.trentialia.com. I used www.bahn.de - the Wunderbar German Railways web site that gives schedules for nearly all European trains and for me is the easiest to use.

Thanks a bunch. If we get off the ferry in Livorno around 5:30, we probably won't get to our hotel in Sestri Levant until 8:30 to 9. Perhaps best to overnight in Livorno and get the train to Sestri Levante in am --why pay the big bucks to sleep?
