Need Help with Locations of Naples Apartments

We will be spending 5 nights in Naples next September and are looking for an apartment. We’ve narrowed the hunt to the following 5 apartments. Each one has its own pluses and minuses but, since we’ve never been to Naples, we don’t have a good idea of the pros and cons of the different neighborhoods. For those of you who are familiar with Naples, we’d appreciate your insight on the locations of the apartments.

We haven’t yet planned our time in Naples, but I expect that we will go to Pompeii and one of the nearby islands. The rest of time will likely be spent in Naples. We are walkers but I expect that we want to have access to public transportation to get around. We don’t want to be way out in the ‘burbs but don’t feel that we “must” be central old Naples. Being near great restaurants is important. Thanks in advance.

1. a bit far from convenient public transportation, especially since you would need to walk steeply uphill to get "home". Would be much better to be closer to piazza Vanvitelli

2. best location in terms of enjoying Naples but in such a heavily trafficked area, not completely pedestrianised, I would be unable to take the noise unless windows are double glazed (reviewers seem to indicate they are) but maybe noise doesn't keep you awake.

3. stuck off in a corner of Naples, making it a hike to many sites

4. same as 3

5. same as 3, 4

I suggest that you keep looking, and look mainly around the metro stations Toledo, Dante, Universita and Museo, but also Vanvitelli if you are okay with taking the funicular. That last is an interesting neighbourhood (I've stayed there and really enjoyed it) and once you get the hang of the metro and the funiculare, it's a breeze. But if you want to walk to everything, than being in the vicinity of the other metro stops, even if you are not using the metro, puts you in the heart of the historic centre, and you will only occasionally want the metro for the Capodimonte museum or Castel Sant'Elmo and other uphill sites.

sorry for my typo -- reviews of apartment No 2 leave the impression that the windows are NOT double glazed, only protection from noise is interior wooden shutters.

#2 or #3
2 is closer to the action, access to boats to island, bus or tam to terminal for points south i,e, Pompeii etc.
do have a coffee at Caffè Gambrinus its over 150 years old coffee house and a great place to stand at the bar and take in a slice of old Naples
3 is a little off the beaten bath but has lovely view and you may to just kick back and enjoy some down time on the terrace and soak in Italian life with home make meal.

1. Vomero is a nice upscale neighbourhood but this apartment is too isolated from convenient public transportation.
2. Now pedestrianised save for taxis however still a very busy location.
3. Great spot - you can take stairs down to Via Santa Lucia and you're one minute from the Lungomare and about a 10 minute walk to Via Toledo, the shopping strip and metro stop. I would choose this one. It's got the views plus the convenience.
4. Also a great spot - a short walk from Piazza Plebescito and on to the Toledo metro stop.
5. Not bad but traffic in front despite what the 'blurb' says (the pedestrian area is closest to the sea). It is right beside the charming Chiaia neighbourhood so has lots of bars and restaurants.

You've got yourself some good options. I would rule out # 1 as it's too isolated. # 2 could be too noisy but very convenient location. # 3 and # 4 would be my choice with # 5 for its terrace.

In reality, I believe apt #3 is closer to a 20-minute walk to the Toledo metro entrance, and similarly 4 & 5, but as self-described walkers, you might not care.

OP - if you choose # 3 or # 4 you could also use the Municipio metro stop as it is also close to you. The other advantage of # 3 is the proximity to the Molo Beverello port should you wish to take a ferry to one of the islands for a day trip.

Thank you for your responses. I have to admit that I was expecting everyone to say that ALL of the locations would be great so I could just pick the one that was most aesthetically pleasing. Apparently, that was not meant to be. Sigh.....

But I'm going to have to decide soon or my husband will kill me

Since he won't listen to me anymore, I'm hoping you still will. What do you think of this apartment at the Hotel Piazza Bellini?

http://www.hotelpiazzabellini.com/en...artament-value

No terrace or view but foozball.

Thanks.

I like the looks of the apartment and can vouch for the Hotel Piazza Bellini where I stayed last May. Loved its location in the historical center. Just a few minutes walk through the Port'Alba and you're at the Piazza Dante where there's a metro station.

Hotel Piazza Bellini - Absolutely perfect location and hotel. You are right in the thick of it - almost beside the Naples Conservatory of Music and you can hear the students in the piazza.

As the post above says, a quick walk to your left and right will bring you to the Porta Alba gate and to Piazza Dante which is on Metro Line 1 - three stops to the main station.

It's also good to rent an apartment linked to a hotel as you get the best of both worlds, with the hotel able to help you out with information, maps and so on.

Thank you everyone. Your input was very valuable and we have decided to stay in the apartment at Hotel Piazza Bellini. Feel free to stop by when we are there in September for a game of Foozball.

Please write a trip report on your return

I was following this thread with interest, Naples is high on my list ( but don't think I can make it in September)

Great choice - we stayed there last September (room 607 with the terrace) and it was excellent. For trips to Pompeii/Herculaneum/Oplontis and Sorrento it was an easy twenty minute walk to Porta Nolana station - less crowded than Garibaldi and we always snagged a seat!
Enjoy your holiday.

Adelaidean - Trip Advisor has some excellent trip reports on Naples (check their Naples forum). Also, check this website for tons of ideas. It is run by three British expats who now live in Naples.

Hi Adelaidean,
Thanks for your comments re the Slovenia trip report. No I didn't do a trip report this time - perhaps during the school holidays here in Sydney I will have time to put something together. I am, however, currently working through the photos. Here's s link to the Naples, Sorrento and Capri ones. The Amalfi Coast and Eastern Sicily are in the works!

I am enjoying looking at your Flickr photos. We're planning a trip to Eastern Germany, Prague and Austria next year.

four_maccas, that's such a coincidence, I didn't realise you were 'amanda', great photos. And I didn't realise you were an Aussie, did you see my koala photos? (https://flic.kr/s/aHskctTEHC)

Looking forward to your Sicily TR and photos, also very high on my bucket list.

Blueeyecod, thanks for that link. Naples looks like my sort of city, and I shall scroll through TA for ideas. North Italy next July for my very first Italy trip (finally!) because I really need to see the Dolomites but the south really calls me.
