clovecleo, I too am in the planning stages of my first trip to Switzerland. These two websites have been invaluable:

For driving times and distances:
www.viamichelin.com

For rail info:
www.rail.ch

Have fun!

I live in Geneva so this is first hand knowledge. The French Alps are closest to Geneva. Chamonix, home of Mt. Blanc the tallest mountain in Europe, is only an hour away by car. There are also several bus tours leaving from near the main train station in Geneva that will take you to Chamonix for the day. For things to do in Chamonix, use the web site http://www.chamonix.com.

To visit the Swiss Alps, you need to get to other end of lake. Saying in the French speaking part, Valais is the canton with the best views of the Alps. Valais is home to ski resorts Crans-Montana and Verbier. There are also numerous vinyards in this area.

You can take the train from Geneva into Sion, and then catch a train from Sion to Crans-Montana. But you can also just take a train up to Montreaux and the Alps are in good view from there.

You can also take a boat ride from Geneva to the other end of the lake and visit Chateau du Chilion. Some boats even offer dinner while on board.

For more ideas, visit the web site http://www.myswitzerland.com.

You can take the train onward (from Sion) to Brig(about 1.5 hours from Geneva by Cisalpino) and transfer for the 1 hr 20 minute trip to Zermatt; from there another cable car ride or cog railway trip to the Matterhorn area.

If you just want spectacular views you could also train to nearer Montreux and take the MOB rack railway up to Rochers de Naye.

1. How much time do you have?
2. The Alps are all over Switzerland in two main ranges, the Berner Oberland and the Pennine Alps on the south side of the Rhone. And then there are the valleys around St. Moritz and Samedan.

There are more places from which to see "The Alps" than most of us will have time to visit in a lifetime.

I can suggest some destinations.
Zermatt is in a glacial basin in the heart of towering peaks, the most famous of which is the Matterhorn. But, there is also Monte Rosa with its huge alpine glaciers.

In terms of being in a place where there are many cable rides to take you higher and a train line or two, I recommend the Berner Oberland south of Interlaken.

The towns/villages of Grindelwald, Mürren,Wengen, and Lauterbrunnen have many hotels and guest houses. From each one, various means of transportation take you higher. The three interesting trips are:
a. the gondola from Grindelwald to the end station called First
b. the Schilthorn from Mürren
c. the Jungfraujoch from Kleine Scheidegg.

The last one is pricey, and many people start the trip at Interlaken Ost. They go to Lauterbrunnen and change trains for Kleine Scheidegg, and change again for the Jungfraubahn that goes to the Jungfraujoch.

But I can throw in Leukerbad, Saas Fee, Zinal/Grimentz as other destinations with high mountains. Saas Fee for example is at the base of the Dom, which is almot 15,000 feet and towers about 10,000 feet above the floor of the valley. The Saas Valley is less well known to Americans, so if you want to go where the average tourist does not go, visit the Saas Valley and the towns of Saas Grundd, Saas Fee, Saas Almagel, and Saas Tomaten.

My favorite destination is the Lauterbrunnene Valley because it is both pretty and tranquil, or at least as tranquil as a place full of people in the summer can be.

From Geneva the train trip to Grindelwald is 3:39 with 2 changes, in Bern and in Interlaken.
(Interlaken Ost)
Saas Fee is a longer grip and involves a bus ride through some gorgeous scenery.

So I think the decision is up to you.
How much time do you have, what do you want to see, and what do you want to do after you get there?
