Late March- early April is a great time to visit Australia. March is great for Sydney & April is pretty good as well. The later the better if you want to go to Northern Australia - the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland/ Kakadu & Darwin in the Northern Territory. The wet season will be ended by then.
Check out the Australia forum for help.

Actually no... ira... single nouns, separated by OR take a single verb.

No different than saying...

Is one country or another country or another destination better than another?

You may find many welcome destinations on American's gulf coast this spring. They'll gladly receive you (not everywhere, naturally), and perhaps let you come home with the satisfaction of a day or more doing some volunter work as well.

Conceivably, there will be recovery efforts on other other continents still in progress, in which you could join, if you wish - - but maybe harder to research and plan.

Best wishes,

Rex

Hi Rex,

>No different than saying...

No different FROM saying....

>Is one country or another country or another destination better than another?

I agree that when comparing A with B, one says, "A is better than B".

One could say, "A combination of A and B is better than C".

If the OP had asked, "Is A better than S or Ams?" it would have been correct.

Now that I have looked at it more closely, it should have been, "Are A or S or Ams good placeS for Spring break?".

Good idea. They're less likely to bug you about your grammar there.

How long is your spring break? If it is only 1 week, Australia is one LONG plane ride for such a short stay.

(since we don't know where you live, it's hard to guess about flight times)

Amsterdam would be an excellent suggestion. Or you can go to Mexico but go somewhere different from party-central at Cancun... Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Zihuatenejo, Mexico City, etc.

I try to better pair up my trips, taking the longer & more expensive plane rides when I have the most time to spend. For instance, myself, I'd never go to Europe unless I have at least 10 days, and preferably 2-3 weeks.

They made that decision in less than 7 hours & apparently money is no object...A little different than when I was in school & driving to Lauderdale, & sharing a room w/4 others. lol

No, you're still wrong, ira... when a compound subject contains the conjunction "or" between subjects which are each single, the verb must agree with single. It is as if each clause is compound.

Is A a good place or is B a good place or is C a good place?

Since place(s) can only be the predicate noun in this sentence, it should be single with "or"s - - and only plural if the compound subject contains AND.

Are A and B and C good places?

Your ever humble pedant..

Hi Rex,

After my antihistamine kicked in (or turned off) I realized that you were correct.

"Is A or B or C....." is the same as saying "Is A.... Is B.... Is C....".

I withdraw my previous statements and stand corrected.

I look forward to the day that I have too much time on my hands.

When that day comes, I suppose I may comment on the internet... about people who I perceive to have too much time on their hands.

I'm still pondering the original posted question... Cancun Mexico, Amsterdam, Spain, or Australia??? 4 completely different destinations, I don't see any common denominator.

Doesn't cost of the trip or price/length of the flight matter? As mentioned above, nice work if you can get it.

Suze,

Thanks for your advice and your right about "...Europe unless I have at least 10 days, and preferably 2-3 weeks."
If I decide to go to Spain, I might as well include Amsterdam and plan it as one full trip.

Australia on the other hand, its a smaller place for me to cover. I just want to visit NSW area (I'll deal with Perth and the other places later.) They also got some great surfing spots.

And the thing about Mexico is that a lot of college students (such as myself) go there and it may feel that I haven't left the US at all. Plus, I just want something different. Im from Los Angeles so Mexico is just a skip and a hop to where Im at.

Again, thanks for you and everyone's advice.

I've been to Europe on spring break probably 15 times during the late 80's to 2004. It is not a difficult trip to make, if you concentrate on doing just one country at a time. I would typically go to Switzerland for a week or Italy for a week.

The weather in Europe in late March is very "iffy" because we've sometimes seen good weather and sometimes SNOW. The warmest temps would be in Italy or Spain/Portugal, I would guess.

Australia is marvelous!!! Positively wonderful!!! I've been 6 times. But it is waaaayyyy to far to go on just a spring break. You need at least 2 wks or more to venture that far.

hi phro, thanks for checking back and telling us more. sure, if you don't mind a long plane ride and only plan to explore one area, why not Australia? sounds great.

but for future i do urge you to keep Mexico in mind. if you go somewhere different from Cancun, there are loads of places that are not at all overrun by college students, and believe me you will most definitely know you have left the United States. gotta branch out a bit to find it.

Carol,

Thanks for your advice Carol and your right about the weather and the time constraints in Europe. I think I'm going to play it safe and go to Europe in the summer...(hopefully) so i'll have more time to venture out.
I was in Prague and Hungary just this last Spring Break (and took an extra week of course)and totally fell in love with the place(s).
Im planning on doing the same thing this coming Spring Break... taking an extra week off before or after my break. My consulation in Australia is that I have friends that can show me around.

"Man... so many places, so little time (and money)"

I wish I was a millionaire so I don't have to go to work and school.... hehehehehehe

thanks again
