need Galway lodging

Sorry about duplicate post- realized Galway didn't show up in other title.

We'll be in Galway for 2 nights in September with our two twenty something daughters. Have heard good things about Salthill but also heard it's a little remote and driving to where pubs/shops are is a pain. Would appreciate recommendations on area and specific b&b's or hotels.

The beauty about Salthill is that it's not remote! Some B&B's on College Rd. are as far from Eyre Sq. (aka JFK Sq.)

Lower Salthill is about 200m from the Claddagh Port. Upper Salthill may be a bit farther: a nicer neighborhood of really impressive homes and B&B's. And there's always public transportation.

Many of the nicer Pubs are in Galway's Pedestrian-only area. Delivery Vans & Trucks go in there in the early AM but you're not allowed to drive there.

September is my favorite month weather wise to visit Ireland. Where else in the Irish Republic will you be going?

Right now I'm trying to decide. ONly have six nights and have to fly in and out of Dublin. So we're spending the first 2 nights in Dublin and the last night in Dublin. Nights 3 & 4 in Galway. Trying to decide if we'd rather spend night 5 in Doolin at a castle or B&B or go to Bunratty and see the park and try to do the Medieval Banquet, in which case we would stay there. Any suggestions?

my suggestion in the jurys galway.
don't stay at the great southern carib.
the medieval banquets are cool, but very expensive. bunratty is cool, and doesn't take alot of time. i'd try to make time to see the aran islands and the cliffs if you are there.

I have not been to Bunratty, but I have been to Doolin a few times and it's one of our favorite places. Great traditional Irish music and very pretty. You can also take a ferry to the Aran Islands from there.

Galway's Oyster Festival is delayed this year (28 Sep-01 Oct) because of the Ryder Cup (Golf) matches the week that festival is normally scheduled. Those Golf marches will be at Kildare Golf Club, a beautiful spot.

From Salthill it's also quite easy to go west to Connemara, or you could get a boat to the Aran Islands from Ross a'Veal, where many of the excursions you book from Galway City board the boat.

LOYL, What "castle" would you be staying at in Doolin?

Not sure if it's in Doolin or just outside- Ballinalacken Castle. We've also looked at Sea View House, which is well located. We have to go back to Dublin the next day- it seems as if we stayed near Bunratty we wouldn't have as long a drive. Thanks for all the input, folks.

Sorry to report that Ballinalacken Castle Hotel is not a "castle hotel" but rather a manor house type hotel. There is a ruined castle tower on the property (not attached to the hotel) but the rooms are regular hotel rooms. If you look at their website you will notice that the tower is in an elevated position overlooking the hotel.

Not every place in Ireland that has "castle" in the name is a genuine castle. It is not right in Doolin but a few miles away.

We stayed at Petra House a few years ago on College Road. Wonderful hosts and nice accommodations. Great breakfasts. Also an easy walk into Galway center.
