Need advice on train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam

We are spending a couple of days in Amsterdam before leaving on a cruise that departs from Rotterdam, and I need some advice on getting from Amsterdam to the cruise terminal in Rotterdam. First, can anyone tell me which station in Rotterdam is closest to the cruise terminal? Second, should I make reservations before we leave the U.S. on Aug. 26 for travel on the 31st? Thanks in advance for your help!

You get the train to Rotterdam Centraal. From there either the metro or bus, or maybe a taxi depending on how much luggage you have.
You cannot book the normal intercity trains, you buy your tickets at the station. If you choose Thalys or Fyra for a faster journey you can book and both will cost a lot more.
Have a look at www.ns.nl for train info, and http://www.cruiseportrotterdam.com/p...ion/route.html for info on how to get to the terminal.

Fyra costs about 3 euros more, for a one way ticket Amsterdam - Rotterdam. That's not a lot. Thalys is a different category, I agree.

Rotterdam CS is now nearly finished, so changing to metro is now super easy. But be aware that the only way to buy a ticket is to get one from a ticket machine, so bring coins. And if you take a taxi look out for one with the RTC sign, or Taxi St Job: they're the best ones.

Take any metro to Slinge, and get off at stop Wilhelminahaven. From there, the cruise terminal is about 200 metres. There's a lot of building work going on at the moment as they are finishing the Rotterdam building, so part of the street leading to the cruise terminal has temporary sidewalks.

Buses don't stop near the cruise terminal, but if you wish to take a tram, 23 an 25 also have a stop at Wilhelminahaven.

Thanks to both of you for the great info - one more question: What is the procedure for checking luggage?

.

With train travel, you keep your luggage with you throughout your journey, putting it on the racks above your head, between the seats or at the end of the car - there is usually no separate baggage car. Unlike travelling by air, you do not check your bags in, nobody weighs them, nobody measures them, or argues about their size or weight! You have access to your bags throughout the journey, and they are unlikely to end up at an airport a thousand miles away from your destination. So, just to recap: You get onto the train with your bags and put small and medium sized bags on the luggage racks above your head, larger items on the racks at the end of the coach or in many cases between the seats inside the coach seating area. It's that simple!

Thanks, Anja -- in France and in Italy we've checked bags for train travel, but doing so in Paris nearly cost me my sanity!
