Try the Casa del Fino in Chania in the western part of Crete, which is beautfiul and less crowded. Its a great old converted Venetian, pension right near the harbor. You can take day trips to the beaches or Rethymnon. Crete is big so, what we did, was spend 5 days on the west side, then drove to the east side and stayed in Elounda, which was alos nice. From Elounda, you cna day trip to Knossos and the museums at Heraklion. As for the ferry to Santorini, sorry. It's a long ride, and not doable in a day (I believe). If you can spend a few days in Santorini as well, truly one of the wonders of the world.
Thanks! Maybe we will spend a night or two in Santorini then.
Go to Khania (Hania) in Crete -- super romantic. Iraklion is not as great. You might also want to check out the ruins at Knossos (if you are into ancient history). Also, don't miss out on Athens! IT is AMAZING! Santorini is a must. Rent mopeds and have a blast.
