Need a town along Romantic Road to spend Christmas Eve/Day
Hi - my husband and I are taking a 5-day River cruise between 18-22 dec, 2011. We will end the trip in Frankfurt. We fly out of Zurich on Dec 26th. We have rented a car in Frankfurt. My question is - other than Rhotenburg (which we have been to several times), can anyone recommend a town that would be ideal for spending Christmas Eve and Day. We are concerned that we will be virtually abandoned in a hotel if everything shuts down. Also, what are the must-see towns along the way? Augsburg? Thank you in advance for any advise you can offer us. Sincerely, BarbaraGinNC/USA

Hi
It is not as bad as you fear, but on Christmas Eve after about 2-3 O' clock in the afternoon Germany shuts down. However Christmas Day is like a normal Sunday: Shops are closed yes, but restaurants are open. I would suggest you try to find a bigger hotel on Christmas Eve because then staff will be present. As for places on the Romantic Road: try Weikersheim with its castle, Creglingen with its Thimble Museum and pilgrimage church opposite, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen, Donauwörth and perhaps Landsberg am Lech. There is also Füssen for Ludwig's castles. On the way to Zurich: Friedrichshafen or Konstanz on Lake Constance. Mainau near Konstanz has magnificent gardens. However keep an eye on the weather. It is winter and it can snow.
