Personally, I wouldn't stay in Interlaken, unless I had to. The little towns in the Jungfrau region are only a 15 minute train ride away and are much more picturesque. I always stay in Lauterbrunnen, but Wengen, Grindelwald, murren, are all great. I like Lauterbrunnen because it is on the main train route, so it's centrally located.

Ann Marie:
look no further than The Goldey Swiss....I've touted it on this forum several times. We enjoyed staying across the beautiful River Aare....idyllic location, footbridge over the river and then a pleasant ten minute walk on the promenade alongside the river.to center of I'laken. Also only a nice 15 minute promenade walk to Interlaken Ost station for trains to all Jungfrau areas. Ask for a balcont room overlooking the river, with "wow views" of the Alps.

I would also avoid Interlaken, particularly in July and August. At that time, the town is lined with tour busses, and the off-loaded passengers clog up the sidewalks and the stores. You'll get shoved off the sidewalks . . .
In comparison, the car-free villages above Interlaken are calm and peaceful, as if they were in another world. Truly, your experience will be a lot better if you opt to stay there. To have a look, see

Hi again,
Sorry, I personally wouldn't stay in Lauterbrunnen. Lots of folks like it, but I just don't. It sits at the base of some cliffs that overhang the village, and they always depress me. Some folks don't even see the cliffs, and others say the cliffs add to the charm of it. It's just how I look at it.
Wengen and Mürren (the two car-free villages I mentioned) sit IN the mountains, and your views are over to the peaks or down to the village. It's really another world there.
I've stayed at the Alpenrose in Wengen two times.
Have fun!
