We will be near Cannes,France during the last few days of the film festival. Has anyone ever been there during that time? Should we avoid that area or is it worth being there? due the prices of everything go up? Any suggestions?

Cannes itself would be best avoided during the festival because of high prices for hotel rooms and the sheer number of people crowding the area.
Nice or Antibes would be a better choice, but you'll need to hurry and get reservations. Quite a few of the hotels near Cannes get booked up early on. If you'll have a car you could consider staying at an in-land village, such as Mougins or Valbonne.
If you have accommodations, it is very interesting to see the scene at Cannes during the festival. More than once in the past, I went from Nice to Cannes for the day to check things out.
